THE CAUCASIAN. Official Journal of the City of Shreveport. WEDNESDAY, APRIL 8, 1903. NOMINATIONS BY PRIMARIES. The system of nomination by white Democratic primaries of all candidates from governor to constable, besides giving the most humble and weak mem bers of the party direct voice in the selection of public officials, will prove to be an educator of the masses of the people and a training school for candi dates. Primaries will force all candi dates to appear before the people for the discussion of public men and matters, and this discussion will familiarize the people with public'men and affairs. Monrbe News. The nominations by primaries has been a hobby of the Caucasian. For years we have advocated this system against the "cut and dried" convention. It is now time for the forceful agita tion of this question. Why should the politicians dominate over the people who have the power if they would exer cise it intelligently. The people should Isow and have the right to know where s...

THE CAUCASIAN. Official journal of the City of' ,ire-veporL. •ouI ' 'IRIJdV 'AVQSII'ILHI CONFEDE tl TE MEMORIAL DAY. It may be of general interest to state that at the reunion of the Confederate Veterans held in Dallas last year it was the sense of the majority that Confed erate Memorial Day be observed throughout the South on June 3, which is the birthday anniversary of Jeffer son Davis, President of the Confederate States. In Louisiana Memorial Day has been observed on April 6, the anniversary of the first day's battle of Shiloh, where thousands of Louisianians yielded their lives for the Cause which led them to sacrifice the comforts and their loved ones at home for the sanguinary field, but while there was much to the credit of State pride in such memorial celebra tions, it was confined to within the ter ritorial borders of Louisiana, as other such events were limited to the States in which glorious victories were won. In fixing June 3 as the Confederate Memorial Day, there will...

THE CAUCASIAN. Official Journal of the City of Shreveport. SUNDAY, APRIL 12, 1903. AN ISSUE IN THE STATE CAMl PAIGN. In this issue is reproduced from the Times-Democrat of April 9 an editorial headed "Politics in Two States," which is commended to the careful and earl est perusal of every reader of the Cau casian. It is gratifing to note that the question of nominations by primary elections is growing and becoming all powerful, as indicated by the utterances of the press throughout the State. The great majority of Democrats who vote are realizing the effect of the abuses, of "cut and dried" conventions where the program of a few is schemed through, after which the dear, good people who may not favor such meth ods or scheming may be -. In the future, as in the past, the very sugges tion of the nomination of officials from governor to constable by primary elec tions will arouse the wrath of the politi cal time-servers, the untiring feeders at the public crib, whose power and in fluenc...
