MECHANICS PETITION. There can be no denying the fact that the mechnnics of Ililo have been in hard lines for the past year. The citizen mechanics 'have felt the pressure from Asiatic cheap labor. Behind it all there has not been a vastly large amount of work doing, either by whites or asiatics. It is therefore quite natural that these men should set about seeking a way to better their condition. It is also quite natural that the first thought would be to turn to the Legislature for relief measures. The American hack and stage drivers have a bill now in the Legis lature which has received favorable action and if adopted will render their calling much more remunera tive. Railroads and other" corpora tions are asking the legislature for exemption from taxation and other favors which will enable them to more...

CEljc gtlo vilmnc. FRIDAY, APRIL to, 1903. Kntcied nttlic Postofficc ol Hilo, Ha. wall, a second-class nmttcr ruiiusimn kvkrv l'Rinw. L. W. HAWORT1I liuitor. THE CONFERENCE COMMITTEE. The County bill as passed by the Senate, falls far short of the wishes of the people compared with the bill as it passed the House. The people of Hawaii have hoped that the policy evinced in the Setiate is merely one of conservatism that will yield to proper pressure. Should it appear that the Senators have given all thev are willing to give, the weight of popular criticism will rest upon the upper branch. The House bill more nearly suits the people. In the conference committee the Senate has most to yield and if it proves stiff necked, the mask of pretense will be stripped from the faces of the enemies of popular government in Hawaii. But, as a jury trying an import ant law suit, the people demand an agreement. They want an agree ment in time so that the bill may be submitted to the Governor too early...
