It was founded in the first years of the current cen tury, and was growing apace in '1812-13 when tbe terrible New Madri i earthquake shook the village off its piss and so fright ened it that it was "ttuoU;d" and couldn't grow any more. Soon afterwards the first steamer ever en ia the YV'st. an original, snorting, high-pressure craft, came one dark, oisuial. foggy, dreary night, aflame and puffing and biowiug down the Ohio. Bnawneetowa ui-ardthn uproar, and had just dug up a bebeuioth's bones, and had never ueard of the inventor, Fulton, or of a steamboat. The whole population of Shaw neelowu nine men, three women ami ne groes stood opon the river bank and in rapt wonder gazed and listened.
