Modern Kgypt. Thoughts in striking contrast with those evoked by the warning to the English nation by ■ speaker in parlia ment a few weeks ago follow the read ing of United States Special Agent 0. M. Pepper's recent report on trade conditions and development in the laud of the pharaohs. Taking Ills test from a local outbreak of violence against the British ruler, a conservative member of the cabinet appealed to the patriots not to side with the malcontents In Egypt, as that country was ready to plunge Into a holy war and attempt to over throw British domination. Mr. Pepper sees the commercial side only, but his picture of Industrial progress In "the most promising territory bordering the Mediterranean anywhere from Gibral tar to the Bed sea" Is far removed from any suggestion of widespread discon tent or of evils of British administra tion which would Invite an uprising. To quote: The policy of 'the khedlve's govern ment, which Is only another name for English authority, is paternal...

Memorials to Pioneers. Although civilization has reached a ■tag* i" this country where extensive cities have grown up in every section, we are frequently reminded of our comparative youth by events like the Pike's peak centennial celebration. Re cently a movement was started to erect a monument to the pioneer Nor wegian who came over in 1821 to spy out the land for his people, Kleng I'eerson. As a result of Peerson's Tlslt 11 vast region has been settled by his countrymen. Pike's peak was an old landmark on the map when the first band of Peerson's followers put the ax to the forest, but before It stood for anything more than a mere tradition In fact the Norwegian! bad cleared a wil derness and built cities. Men and women who are not yet passed m...

A couple of school ma'ams engaged a horse and buggy from Mason's livery barn, at Latah, to drive to Falrtield last Saturday. A short distance out of town lie was amazed to see a rig stand ing by the roadside with a couple of ladies Handing in the pouring rain holding an ambrelia over the horse. On inquiring what the difficulty was he was informed: "The liveryman cau tioned US not to allow the rain to get under the horse's tail, or he would run away.
