NORTHERN TRIBUNE. Official Paper of the County and Village. SATURDAY. FEBRUARY 9, 1878. THE NEW TARIFF BILL. The Committee on Ways and Means, of the House, has reported a new tariff bill which, if it becomes a law, will make some radical changes. It may be that the tariff needs adjusting, but it is something, we think, which should be done with care aud the effect thoroughly discussed, so that no change should be made which would be detri mental to the great industries of the country, upon which so many thousands of the citizens depend for a livelihood. This tariff bill is something the citizens of Michigan are particularly interested iu.for the proposed changes threaten some of the leading interests of the state. The Detroit Post and Tribune has compiled a list of some ot the leading products of the state, and gives present rates as well as the proposed rates, from which we select the following: PRESENT RATES. Pig iron $7 per ton. Scrap iron $6 to 8 per ton. Railroad bars 70 eta. p...

NORTHERN TRIBUNE. Official Paper of the County and Village. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 1G, 1878. THE IWARQrETTE A MACKINAW RAILROAD. Forborne months past negotiations h;u e been in progress regarding the eon construction of this road, which have raised the hopes of the people in nil sections ot the state that the road would soon be in process of construction. The Tribune has given its readers the bene, fit of all the facts as they tntiispired, which have led the public to hope lor the speedy commencement of this im portant enterprise. At the same time it has had very little faith in the success of the present negotiations, but rot wish lug to throw a straw in the way of that success, has thus far refrained from giving a public expression to those doubts or the reasons which have caused them.
