AFItR HOURS Korea revisited [Newspaper Article] — El Sereno Star — 30 April 1964
AFItR HOURS Korea revisited By JOHN MORin SEOUL, KOREA—We were eye-witness to much of the Korean war from 1950 to the signing of the armistice at Panraunjom in July, 1953. We have been back to Korea several times since and now again in subzero weather in 1964. It will be 11 years next July , since the shooting stopped in Korea. But peace is hot yet in sight. There are daily shootings and incidents in no man's land across the 38th parallel Red tactics and harassmen ts have not changed their pattern. There are kidnappings of civilians by the Reds all along the demilitarized zone especially attractive Korean women and young girls. . Liaison between East and West is almost non-existent. Newspapermen are unable to get much concrete information from the UN command in Seoul, except that there is nothing of significance to report. Some 24 hours after a shooting incident, in which two sentries were wounded, the UN command had no information at all on it. American, soldiers are still being ki...

LAW IN ACTION [Newspaper Article] — El Sereno Star — 30 April 1964
LAW IN ACTION The right to counsel is important when a person's life or liberty is at stake. Our founding fathers, knowing this, wrote some guarantees into the [constitution. I The U.S. Supreme Court has re- . , . cently clarified your right to counsel in a criminal case. There the right is most meaningful since the state prosecutes criminal, cases. In one case the U.S. Supreme Court said that a convicted person is entitled to have court appointed counsel look over his conviction; and if necessary, appeal his case; it is not enough for the State just to. provide him .with' an attorney for the trial. Califomisi provides the accused with a public defender or a court appointed lawyer when he cannot afford one. Until recently, no poor person had a right to a lawyer if be could not pay a fee to appeal his case to a higher court. Now the court of appeal must assign a lawyer to look over the trial court proceedings to see if the accused had a fair trial or other grounds for an appeal. The ...

Large sums are boring to read about unless you are going to get some of the money, but they are taxpayer dollars and go for public service, and that is important to all of us. It looks as If the city will have a budget of about $3OO million for the coming fiscal year which starts July 1. For the current year It is $379 million, and there were demands last spring on the dty council to impose new taxes to raise this sum. But the budget was balanced anyway through normal Increases in property tax valuations, sales tax increases as more people buy more things and increased subventions from the state because of our increasing population. This spring there are fresh demands for new taxes but it is possible that the sales tax, which b...

Choosing A Car—r— Choice of life's work deserves much time, thought and effort [Newspaper Article] — El Sereno Star — 30 April 1964
Choosing A Car—r — Choice of life's work deserves much time, thought and effort By Or. Leonard Steinberg Counselor and Assistant Proflessor of Education California ■tale College at Los Angeles People choose their life occupations for a great variety of reasons, good and poor, and in a variety of ways. Some enter the field of engineering, for instance, because of an overpowering urge to be engineers and will make almost any sacrifice to follow their choice. They are like the young man who was sent by his parents to a vocational guidance center to find thr occupation for which he waa best suited. At the final interview, ha said to his counselor, “I want it understood from the beginning that no matter what you tell me, I am going to be a musician.” REASONS VARY Sometimes a person chooses a professional Held, such as engineering, for quite different reasons. He may have been forced into it by parental pressure. If he is not very bright, the mistake soon becomes apparent to both father a...

ANN LANDERS Awwtn Your Problwws He should let it ring if he can't be polite [Newspaper Article] — El Sereno Star — 30 April 1964
ANN LANDERS Awwtn Your Problwws He should let it ring if he can't be polite Dear Ann Landers: My husband's 22-year-old brother got out of the service three weeks ago. Vernon is staying with us until he finds a job. I have just about decided that if he doesn't go to work within two weeks I am going to work because I can't stand him around much longer. If you can tell me what to do about just one of Vernon's habits I will be grateful. My husband says I have no sense of humor. I say his brother is a jerk. Vernon answers our telephone with: “Mazie’s House of Pleasure” or, “State Mental Hospital, Give to Mental Health or I’ll kill you." Sometimes he says, "Benny’s Bookie Joint,” or "St. Patrick's Cathedral, the Cardinal speaking.” Our friends and relatives are complaining that this nut shakes them up with his crazy jokes. The last time Vernon did this, the Baptist minister was on the phone. He didn’t think it was very funny. Am I wrong? —BRINK OF WAR ANN’S REPLY: Dear Blink: Since yonr h...
