REAL ESTATE. TO THE PUBLIC. The City of New York, of the Pacific, situated at the head of ship navigation upon the bay of Suisun at its junction with the rivers Sacramento and San Joaquin, has been most accurately surveyed by Captain R. P. Hammond U. S. A. and laid out in the most beautiful and convenient manner, and maps have been prepared by E. H. Rowe, Esq. Engineer and land surveyor, pointing out clearly each and every lot within the surveyed limits of the city, and the proprietors now offer them for sale to the public. Along the entire water front of the city a public street is laid out one hundred and fitly feet in width, beyond which no ground will ever be sold, and the proprietors therefore guarantee to the purchaser of all lots fronting on Water street that no building shall ever be erected between their purchuse and the water. From the ™>"«'*• [Newspaper Article] — Weekly Alta California — 31 May 1849

From the Mines (Correspondence of the Alta California.) Jamestown, May 13th, 1849 "Stanislaus diggings," five miles from the river. Gentlemen — Thinking that yourselves and your numerous readers will be gratified by any news of this remarkable and rich region, I devote a little leisure to give you the benefit of my mining knowledge as observation, and will do so from my daily "log." I arrived at this place on the 7th May. It is named in honor of Mr. James, who is an Alcalde "as is an Alcalde," and who dispenses grub and justice to the satisfaction of all. Hundreds were busy in the ravines, washing out the treasures of the gold-laden streams with various success. Sunday, 8th. The day is delightful, and the scene in this valley is worthy of a painter's skill, or the pen of an enthusiast. The morning is devoted (if devotion can exist in such a state of society) to the trial of a robber named Corrigan, who had stolen ten thousand dollars worth of gold from Den and Dent. He was convicted...

A Lvgal Outrage. [Newspaper Article] — Weekly Alta California — 31 May 1849

A Legal Outrage. ALTA CALIFORNIA. SAN FRANCISCO, SATURDAY JUNE 2, 1849. When the people of the American Revolution gave their sanction to the immortal Declaration of Independence — when they pledged their lives, liberty, and honor to maintain it — they knew that it contained one feature superior to all others — a feature that was the basis upon which the whole superstructure rested, and which was destined to become the foundation of the greatest of Republics. That feature was the principle of "No taxation without representation." Under that banner they fought and conquered, and from that hour has gone forth the truth that conflict elicited, that the people are the sovereigns, and the legislature and executive only their servants. The people of the United States have said since the revolution that they were grateful for the blessings and glory which the patriotism and courage of their fathers had given them. They say it every year over and over again, at their Fourth of July celebrat...

Tlie Indian DiMurbuiu-e*. [Newspaper Article] — Weekly Alta California — 31 May 1849

The Indian Disturbances. [From the Placer Times of May 12.] Correct Detail of the Massacre of Indians on Cosumne River — Statement of Wm. Daylor. — The letter below was received at our office shortly after our own prepared account had been published. In many particulars it will be found to differ materially from the one referred to. We readily give it a place. — "On about the 20th ult. I left my rancho with a party of Indians in my employ for the mines. After making such arrangements as were necessary, I left them and returned. About the 26th, a party of armed white men came to their camp, or where they were at work, and killed an Indian while working with a crow-bar, and on his knees; they then shot another through the arm, who tried to escape. After a run of a short distance he was shot through the thigh, when trying to conceal himself, his brains were beat out with rocks and stones. Some white men who were about my camp, on hearing the alarm ran towards the spot and met the party...
