FAKQUAR'S MEDICATED CALIFORNIA II 11 BBAIBT! A delicious Tonic Bitten Juice of the Grape, medicated with Juniper, Rhubarb, and Peruvian Bark, lor Invalids. "Geod Wine needs no Itiisli," T>UT in this age of quackery and humbug, it is 1 9 necessary to at least state the virtues or qualities of even a well known article, and certainly the California Grape could lay claim to this title. I believe, indeed, I know from experience, that its juice produces a purer, less hurtful, and more exhilarating and healthful beverage than nine-tenths of the stuff imported and imitated in the United States. If this can be said of the wine usually sold, what cannot be said of Brandies? Pah! the very thought is significant of poison. But to the purpose. Dr. Jus. L. I'arqiiai's Mi:dienlcd California Wine and Brandy, is simply the fer men ted juice, and the distilled juice of the California (irape, judiciously medicated with Peruvian Park, Turkey Rhubarb, Juniper Berries, and othervegetable remed...

"Mother Made It." [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 11 February 1860

"Mother Made It." A few weeks since, while in one of the beautiful inland cities of Wisconsin, an incident oecurcd which awakened in my mind a train of reflections which possibly may be written and read with advantage. I was hurrying along the street, when my attention was arrested by the appearance of a little hoy on the side of the pavement selling candy. He was not really beautiful, nor was he decidedly the reverse. His age was about nine years; his clothes were old and faded, hut well patched. His candy was spread upon a coarse white cotton cloth, neatly stretched over what had been a japanned server. He was surrounded by a small group of hoys, c idcntly belonging to different grades of society. As I came nearly opposite to him the oft reiterated interlude, ' Candy, sir?" fell upon my cars, and, although opposed to the excessive use of candy, I stepped aside to patronize the light haired, pale, freckled, homespun little representative of trade. I purchased of him, partly for his...

A Seminary in Visalia. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 11 February 1860

A Seminary in Visalia. To what was written last week under the above heading we would add that the plan proposed to raise funds to build and furnish this Institution, is not a gift of money to pass forever out of the hands of the donor, but it is only a loan of money without interest, to be refunded out of the first proceeds of tuition: and the entire property remains in the hands of the Stockholders for two years after the Opening of the first session as collateral security. The Principal or Proprietor only occupying it free of rent, until the expiration of two years, when the house becomes his for his services. Yet any part of an unpaid subscription is not nullified by this change, but the remainder of the claims of the unpaid principal of each subscriber still stands as a lawful claim against the proprietor of the property. Each subscriber has the right to transfer his claim either entire or In part at any time after the payment of the amount subscribed. Next week the plan and sp...

From San Jose. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 11 February 1860

From San Jose. January, 31st 1860. Mr. Editor: —San Jose is decidedly a model city of this unprccedentedly progressive State. The same spirit of unrelaxing energy and unyielding perseverance which characterizes the citizens of your own beautiful Visalia, is the controller of the motives and measures of the business men of San Jose. This being said, it is useless to say more in her behalf, unless I add, that if the country surrounding her is not more beautiful and productive than the rich acres of the "Four Creek" section, it is equally so.— What is the leading cause of these giant strokes of each of you for future greatness ? I think I have seen enough, in my journey from San Bernardino to this place, to understand the solution of the qucrry: Being sisters of the same line —urshered into existence by the necessities of unsatiablc California progression, and reared into present advancement by the indomitable labors of individual determination—you long to come into closer intimacy, an...

Atlantic Items. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 11 February 1860

Atlantic Items. By favor of a friend we were allowed the privilege of perusing the St. Louis Eepnblican,'ot the 19th January, brought by the last Overland Mail, and from which we glean the following items. We have also seen later telegraphic news from Washington. The House of Representatives is still ballotting for Speaker, without any prospect of an election : Washington, January 18. Senate. —Mr. Hunter offered a resolution to print 5,000 copies of the Secretary of the Treasury's annual report. Refused. Mr. Uwin introduced a bill to facilitate communication between the Atlantic and Pacific by the electric telegraph. Referred. Mr. Brown introduced resolutions to the effect that the Territories are the common property of nil the States, and that citizens of all have a right to enter into them with property recognized by the constitution; that it is the duty of the law making power whether exercised by Congress or the Territorial legislature to pass laws for the protection of said pro...

Terrible Catastrophe in Lawrence Mass [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 11 February 1860

Terrible Catastrophe in Lawrence Mass LAWRENCE, Mass. Jan. 10.—One of the most terrible catastrophes on record occured in this city this after noon. The l'cmbcrton Mills fell 'with a sudden crash at about five o'olock, while some 000 or 700 operatives were at work. The Mills arc a complete wreck, some two or three hundred persons are supposed to be still in the ruins. At present It is impossible to give anything like a correct statement of the loss of life; but from the best authority, it is believed, at least, two hundred are' dead in the ruins.— Eighteen dead bodies have already been taken out, together with some twenty-five persons mortally wounded, besides some fifty in different stages of mutilation. Mr. Chase the agent of the mill, and Mr. Howe, the treasurer, escaped by running from the falling building. It is impossible at the present time, to tell the cause of the disaster. — Our reporter has just come from the ruins, and the .scenes there beggar all description Some two or...
