The musician turned-mystery-nov- elist who is now running as an inde- pendent candidate for governor said in an interview this week he truly believes members of the GLBT com- munity should enjoy the same rights as straight people. soundout By Tammye Nash questions with Buck Massey Buck Massey, who recently retired as a letter carrier after 22 years with the U.S. Postal Service, has been a member of Stonewall Democrats of Dallas for about 10 years. He currently serves as Political Affairs chairman for the GLBT Democratic political organization. He also served in the U.S. Air Force and is a veteran of the Vietnam War. Was it difficult for you to be a gay man in the military? I wAnot out as a gay man then. There was one instance that I had a close call, but I got out of the military just in time. That was a long time before "Don't ask, don't tell." Back then, it was, 'No way, no how." How long have you been involved as a political activist? I h&fcbeen involved in Democratic Party politics all my life. I grew up in Mississippi in the '60s and saw what was happening there with the civil rights movement. Since I have always known I was different, that was something that really spoke to me. Being involved in pol...

dossier Q of fers the next Sandra Bernhard experience Sandra Bernhard Sandra Bernhard's take-no-prisoners approach to performing has always deserved a regular prime-time television outlet. In 2001, A&E gave her a talk show, "The Sandra Bernhard Experience," that was just too bril- liant to live for very long — so it didn't. But now another chance has come along on the gay cable channel Q Television Network. The progressive, witty, sharp-tongued Bernhard has already begun co-hosting duties on the "Queer Edge with Jack E. Jett" talk show, a "temp job" that will last for 40 episodes. In the meantime, the network is negotiating with the entertainer to develop her own series, though what that might entail is still under discussion. But with Bernhard at the wheel, expect bold opinions, fascinating guests, and a healthy dose of the unexpected. Thompson's animated Buddy Former "Kids in the Hall" star Scott Thompson is finding that mining the past can open doors in the present. His "Kids...

local news Stonewall Democrats issue record 66 endorsements GLBT political organization's leaders encouraged by number of qualified candidates seeking group's backing By Tammye Nash Staff Writer Stonewall Democrats of Dallas endorsed a record 66 candidates in the March 7 Democratic Primary after screening 82 candidates last Saturday and Sunday, according to Jesse Garcia, communications director for the organization. Michael Moon, Stonewall presi- dent, said the number of candidates seeking the gay organization's endorsement is an encouraging sign. "In the past, we have had candidates — one or two — who were supportive of our community but didn't ask for our endorsement because, given the districts they were in, our endorsement would have worked against them. But all these candidates asked for our endorsement, and I think that says a lot about the strength in our community now." Garcia said the qualifications of the candidates were also impressive. "We had seasoned attorneys, educa- ...

progressed to the point I want us to, but we have progressed," he said. Sanders said the Star Telegram is often called "the most liberal newspaper in Texas, which isn't hard," and that he is often called the most liberal writer in the state. He said the Fort Worth paper was one of the first major newspapers in Texas to editorialize against passage of Proposition 2, the anti-gay-marriage amendment approved by vot- ers last November. "We called it what it was> a stupid political idea," Sanders said of the amendment. "We knew it would pass. But we took that stance against it anyway. But at the same time, there are stances we have not taken." Although the newspaper criticized the Boy Scouts of America for excluding gays and athe- ists, "We did not take the next step" and stop con- tributing to the United Way, one of the largest financial supporters of the Boy Scouts. Sanders noted that the Star Telegram includes protections for gays and lesbians in its nondis- crimination policies an...

ENDORSEMENTS Continued from Page 6 answers on gay marriage were very convoluted. As the screening session went on, the questions started to get a little hostile and she eventually said she wasn't actually asking for our endorse- ment," Moon said. Stonewall ended up endorsing the District 110 incumbent, Jesse Jones, in the District 110 race. It was the first time Jones has sought an endorse- ment from a GLBT group, and he gave an impressive presentation, Garcia said. Six of the organization's gay members are on the primary ballot. Two of those, Jack Borden and Tom Malin, are running against each other for the Democratic nomination for the District 108 seat in the Texas House. Stonewall endorsed Malin in that race, but delayed that decision for a day while the orga- nization's leaders investigated allegations about Malin. Moon declined to disclose the allegations but said the organization had found nothing to support them. Other gay Stonewall members who received the organization's en...

Martin said she and her supervisors want to establish better communication with the mem- bers of the GLBT community in an effort to reduce crime in the Oak Lawn gay entertainment and business district and in other areas of the city, such as North Oak Cliff, where there are concen- trations of gay residents. "The department wants a reduction in crime, and so does the community," Martin said. "We need to strengthen the relationship between the department and the community so all communi- cate a little better." Martin said she hopes to be able to spend a few hours each week at the community center to get to know members of the community so they will be comfortable contacting her. Martin said a phone number and an e-mail address has been established for her at the John Thomas Gay and Lesbian Community Center for her to receive information from people who are unwilling to call the police department. regional news Special election for House seat encouraging, lobby leader says Democrat Howard talis just 47 votes shy of outright win in district drawn specifically to be Republican; faces Bentzin in runoff By Tammye Nash Staff Writer Democrat Donna Howard fell 73 votes short of outright victory in a special election held Tuesday to fill the District 48 seat in the Texas House of Representatives. Howard, a former school board member in Eanes, won 49.47 percent of the 13,555 votes cast in the election to fill the seat left empty when Representative Todd Baxter, a Republican from Austin, resigned last November. Ben Bentzin, a Republican and a former exec- utive with Dell Inc., earned a place in the runoff against Howard with 37.8 percent. Kathy Rider, another Democrat who previously served on the Austin school board, came in third with 10.45 percent. Libertarian candidate Ben Easton was a distant fourth with 2.29 percent. freedoms and liberty that says government has no business in anyone's bedroom. He conveys that." Armstrong said he is undecided as to whether he will support Democrat Chris Bell, of Houston, or Friedman. Without support from a political party, most people would probably conclude that Friedman hasn't a prayer of a chance to become Texas' next governor. But campaign finance reports filed this week showed Friedman's political quest is being taken seriously in some quarters. Friedman raised more than three times as much campaign money as the two top Democratic candidates combined. He raised S1.5 million, compared to a total of $422,000 for Democratic Party candidates Chris Bell and Bob Gammage. But even though he has leapt ahead of the Democrats in fijndraising, he lags far behind incumbent Governor Rick Perry, who has raised $4.6 million and State Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn, another independent candi- date, who has raised $2.4 million. nationalnews Pastor calls for boycott of gay-fiiendly companies Support of Washington gay rights law angers conservative groups By Rachel La Corte Associated Press OLYMPIA, Wash. —A pastor has called for a national boycott of Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard and other businesses that have come out in sup- port of a gay civil rights bill, saying the compa- nies have underestimated the power of religious consumers. The Rev. Ken Hutcherson, pastor of Antioch Bible Church in the east Seattle suburb of Redmond — also home to Microsoft — said he would officially make the call for the boycott Thursday on a national conservative talk radio show, "Focus on the Family.''' "We're tired of sitting around thinking that morals can be ignored in our country," he said Monday. "This is not a threat, this is a promise. Check out the past presidential election. We made the moral issue the No, 1 issue." Last week, several companies, including Microsoft Corp., Boeing Co., Hewlett Packard Co. and Nike Inc. sig...
