Off the Editor's Desk: Editor says goodbye by Richard Ruanc Let me open this column by in true journalistic style stating all of the im- portant facts first. 1) I'm transferring my graduate work to Angelo State University. 2) I'm resigning as editor of the Brand. I guess a normal person would take this opputunity to say all the things he always wanted to say to his readers but never really had the chance to. Others might take this time to try and be pro- found about "how my mind has changed" (I'll probably come around to some of that but I'll leave off the great revelations and profound in- sights). My problem is not really be- ing a normal person I don't know what to say. Abilene is the first place i ever chose to live it's the first place I ever chose to set up a permanent residence and it's the first place I ever really decided to try and make "home." tyyy: There are many things I'm going to miss. I'm going to miss the Brand I'm going to miss working at the HSU writing lab and I'...

ns '.V.V.V. .v.vv.v . Non-Traditional Student Comments on Censorship Censorship! That's what I want to talk about censorship. Just about the time I get to liking an editor of the Brand he quits and we have to start all over working on this censorship thing again. To all of my friends that read my column on a regular basis (both of you) I will fill you in on the details. Since this is a Christian Univer- sity there are some things we can't talk about in the Brand. Sometimes I can kind of drop a hint but if I get real close to the forbidden topic a word sentence paragraph or whole story just disappears and is never seen again. My readers come to the con- clusion there was a gap in my mental process when I was writing the story of they think I didn't write a story. They never stop to think I've been CENSURED. I will try to give you some hints in this paragraph and we will se if any part of it survives the editing process. It may since we have a new editor. After the editor gets council...

Ne&'FeOTiil xvj Mft fl New Careers in the Blossoming Green Market Students interested in preparing for a field of work which there is a virtual certainty of rinding employment fol- lowing graduation should look at the burgeoning environmental industry which promises feverish expansion and activity during the years ahead of us. A total of $129 billion dollars was spent on this activity in 199 1 and according to an article in Career Futures Magazine the amountspentwill exceed the nation's defense budget by the turn of the cen- tury. Cleaning up the environment is going to cost taxpayers heavily as new regulations require that past errors be corrected. One firm Management Informa- tion Services estimates that 3.5 million jobs will be directed at "pollution abate- ment and control" alone. These jobs range from hourly wages to lucrative salaries for needed skill specialties as scientists wildlife biologists business administrators and financial analysts. BilS3iB8 New Careers in Enviroment (Continued from page 4) either and many of these will be asked to help citizens understand how eco- systems work in our environment Our culture is moving into a new era and some traditional jobs may well disap- pear or see demand for far fewer work- ers than in the past Hardin-Simmons already has graduates working in some of these fields and has created programs to pre- pare other students to meet the job de- mand in many of the needed areas. For example students with an interest in geology can be virtually assured of work not in oil-related undertakings as has been the case in the past but in the expanding field of enviromental geol- ogy. Workers must understand geohy- drology and other concepts integral to cleaning up the environment. Chemist and biologists as well will be in great demand in this new phase of work.
