DEVLIN v. IRVING. TO THE EDITOR OF THE HERALD. [Newspaper Article] — Jerilderie Herald and Urana Advertiser — 29 April 1898

DEVLIN v. IRVING. TO THE EDITOK OF THE HERALD. Sir, — A few mistakes, evidently due to thc pi inter's devil, occurred in in jr letter under the above heading as published in your last issue. But there is only one — a vital one — that I desire to be rectified. Tolan's brand ing iron, as produced in Court, shows letters thus : ^T, and the only difference between this brand and that of Irving's is as respects the second letter, which is an I in Irving's brand. I understand, however, that it is now contended that Tolan's registered brand shews the letters longitudinally, thus : ^,- Assuming that this is so, the fact remains that Tolnn swore that he branded the animal as the brand appears, and anyone, at -a glance, can see that tho branding iron, if applied perpendicularly, would cause the brand to appear qT. But, as 1 said in my previous letter, the Indistinctness of thc second letter on thc beast rendered impos sible the determination of the brand per se, and thc decision! therefore, h...

THE SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR. [Newspaper Article] — Jerilderie Herald and Urana Advertiser — 29 April 1898

THE SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR.. Tsp long expected lias at last happened 'a'cdither ''dogs of war' have been un leashed and are hard at it tearing each ? other over tha Cuban question. We, in this country, arc more than usually .interested in the outcome of hostilities inasmuch as fellow-membera of the Anglo-Saxon race are concerned m it. Opinion on its duration differ widely, as well as the ultimate outcome, but it needs no patriotic instinct to prompt the conviction that the primary result will mean eventual- victory for the Americans. A 'young country aboemd ;ing ir^.. wealth and resources with apopu ? latiijivoif something like seventy millons to draw upon should find little difficulty in vanquishing an old and decaying nation, whose glory is wholly in the past, 'with but a limited supply of money and, comparatively speaking, a small population. The navies, as far as can be gathered from all accounts, are nearly equal on both sides, although these same accounts further state that what...
