HUMORS OF A WORKHOUSE. [Newspaper Article] — The Wyalong Star and Temora and Barmedman Advertiser — 29 June 1894

HUMORS OF A WORKHOUSE. Skibbereen is a town in the south of Ire land. It is noted all over the world beoause there is printed in that town the Skibbereen Eagle, which once saved all Europe from a most disastrous war. The Skibbereen Eagle, it will be remembered, was the .paper that had its typ — its eagle eye — on the emperor of jxuPHia.. ine emperor was not ecung jusl as a man and a brother should. He was jeopardizing the peace of Europe Other papers miviht have hinted thiB in a vague, unsatisfactory way, but the Skibbereen Eagle spoke right out in meeting. ' We have our eye on the emperor of Russia,' it said editor ially. Naturally the emperor has been quailing under that eye ever since, but he has behaved himself. Long may the Skib bereen Eagle soar. Skibbereen is a place bristling with talent. Even in the workhouse there is a poet. Be sides being a poet he is a man of eloquence, and Ireland miyht do worse than take him out of the workhouse and send him to parliament. James Browne...

Notabilities, MB. GLADSTONE. AND HIS EYE SIGHT. The late premier drove to the house one afternoon, and he noticed as he went through London that a fog was gathering. This was sot unusual at the time of the ycar and it made no impression on the mind of Mr. Glad stone. When he entered the house and sat down beside Sir William Harcourt, he said to that gentleman : The fog outside appears to be getting thicker.' ' Sir William looked at him in' sur prise ana repuea : ' There was no fog outside when 1 earns in.' ' See how it has penetrated into the house.' Mr. Gladstone replied. Sir William looked around him. The house was as clear of . fog asit ever is, and he told the old mas as (tently as possible that such was the case. This was the first intimation that Mr. Glad stone had that his eyesight was foiling him.

HOME OF THE ORANG. [Newspaper Article] — The Wyalong Star and Temora and Barmedman Advertiser — 29 June 1894

HOME OP THE OBANGk . The great island ef Borneo is the.hotne of llhe oraag, V and one' of the most nbticeablo. features of tiie landscape is tbe nests of ft- orang, which ' Mattered about Sdddy^ one night get . grpatly exaggerated impres sion of theplenbfulnees of the epaoies, nnless it were understood ? how and for what pur pose these roosting places were constructed. The apea are greatly annoyed by flies, from whioh they are able to protest the front part of their bodies with their hands, but mey | cannot keep the virions insects from biting them in the rear, and so they gather a quan tity of leaves and branches, and make them into couches to repose against among the boughs. A protection of -this sort serves very well for awhile, but presently its material begins to/decompose, and the decaying leaves attract the flies, whioh the orang is so anxious to get rid of. Then he is obliged to make another nest of fresh stuff, and so he may require a dozen of them in the course of the year...

ANGINA PECTORIS. Have we - any n-medy - for this fearfn' affection f Tes; during the last few jresr8 a remedy has'. -been discovered which is al most a epeoific, and that reotedy4is nitrite ofamyl. Itis a pale straw-ooloured liquid, having an odour, whioh is likened to ? that of pine-apple, or more commonly to pear-drops. It is used as an inhalation. A few drops are i poured on a piece of - lint or pocket-hand- , kerchief, or even into -the palm of the hand, plaoed under the nose, and the vapour in- ! haled.
