THE TREE ONION. [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 31 December 1869

THE TREE ONION. No doubt' many an amateur' 'gardener han J frequontly wondered how it was that he ofteni observed much finer Spanish onions exposed for, sale than he was able to produce himself. Andi in many cases after trying the various modes oft culture prescribed in Gasrdeners' Calendars, &e., fasding his onions would only reach tile dimen-; sions of an overgrown walnut, gave up the at.' tempt in disgust, preferiing to purchase theml rather than suffer the disappointmient of seeing his labour lost owing to destrucition by the onioni grub, climatic influences, and the want of appro.j priats soil. In this as in other cases connected with gardon-. sag the amateur should go beyond books of in struction, and :availing himself of his own in-, telligeonce and observation, aided by. the results! af his .neighbours' experiments, learn that the difference of soil and climate from what are' requisite forms the sole cause of failure. i. THE END OF THE STRUGGLE. [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 31 December 1869

THE END OF THE STRUGGLE. The Age of. Wednesday :contains the following description of the last tussle in the political world for this year:-" At. last l J'he Parliamentary session will close to-day. Much depended on the turn which matters took last afternoon, and. Parliament met at midday with no certain prospect before it of the circumstances under -which the 'sitting would terminate. The Legislative Councillors took a particular interest in the proceedings,? and thronged the Speaker's gallery during thie intervals ii 'their 'bwn business,' which was transacted, as usual at such a time, in fitful gusts. The Assembly esoon fell to work, upon the resolutions of the conference, MIr Macpherson inoving that they be taken into consideration. Mr Hicinbotham took the initiative as a member of the'Assembly, and gave a simple statement of some of the con cessionse made by its representatives, and probably made severaal converts among those who afterwards supported him on the division. -Mr Du...

The cellars in the lower places were filled, and altogether things rmde most unpleasitrt for the residents in that part of the city. The changes which have been in contem. plation in the Macpherseon Cabinet have not yet .been male public, and a considerable samount' of curiosity is shown as to who are to be the comipg men.
