SINGAPORE. HORRIBLE TRAGEDY. [Newspaper Article] — Geelong Advertiser and Intelligencer — 26 January 1852

SINGAPORE. HORRIBLE TRAGEDY. THE chief local event is the sad tragedy on board the barqe Fawn, which vessel left this port on the 28th Sept, bound to Calcutta, with a cargo of China goods. The Fawn was com- manded by Capt. Rodgers, and was manned by Lascars. When here a portion of the Calcutta shipped crew were discharged, and some Malays and Javanese shipped in their stead. On the passage towards Pinang, after being out six days, the barra-tindal was observed by the chief mate to be smoking near the fore-hatch, and on remon- strating with him on such conduct, endangering the safety of the vessel, a dispute arose, and the mate threshed the burra-tindal with a ropes-end. The captain is stated to have approved of the mate's proceedings To avenge himself for what he deemed an insult, the burra tindal gained over a portion of the crew to his diabolical scheme. About midnight the unsuspicious captain was sleeping in a chair on the poop : he was imme- diately dispatched and thrown overboar...
