0UE STOEY COLUMS.! The Drummer. BY JAMES WIUUKSOR. In the early days of the eentury that has just closed, Australian society was very different from what it is to-dny. The convict element was very conspicuous in the com munity ; there were no steamships plying along Australian coasts or on Australian rivers, and railways were unknown not only in this Southern . land, but Tin the world. Settlement was snarse even in the most ?dodu,- lous parts, and so little was Aus tralian territory valued, that miles and miles of it, now worth millions, ' were given away for nothing. The Chronicle. Nullius addictus jurare in verba magistri. NAMBOUR, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 2. The Passing of Philp. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 2 October 1903

NuUitis adaictus jurat? t'ti verba, I jnagistn. Nambour,! Friday, October 2. The Passing ;of Philp, It is fairly safiejto say that a great majority of ;the people of Queensland will ;experience a feeling of relief ak the passing away of the continuous Go vernment, I which, formed ostensibly! 'to : adiust the finances of! the State,' has so hopelessly; bungled and mis managed its affairs as to land it in such ^ position that it can be no enviable task for any party succeeding them to undertake! to extiicate it. This task Mr. Arthur Morgan and those who I have joined hands with him ir& attempting, and thev should at least be able to rely upon the patient consider ation of those who have suf fered so much at the hands of their predecessors. The danger is that too much will be expected of them, and in too short a time. Ever since 1885 things haye been drifting into the condition in Avhich we find them to-day. It did not begin with the formation of the 1890 coalition, else there ...

A Needed Improvement. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 2 October 1903

A Needed Improvement. A decided improvement could easily be made in the receiving letter-box at the Nambour Post office by cutting short the upper ledge. .As it is at present, it is found very awkward to postf letters owing to the distance one %as to push letters in before they will drop to the receptacle below on fthe in side. Instances are knownj where letters have been hing outside itr the open, having slidden bank after persons posting them have left, thinking, of course, their ilettexs have been safely deposited. ?
