COUNCIL CONTORTIONS [Newspaper Article] — The Leader — 28 November 1946

COUNCIL CONTORTIONS At the last meeting of Liverpool Coun cJJ. the Mayor (Aid. B. C. Fitzpatrick) kept a pretty tight rein on the ebulli- tions of his merry men so that for the most part things were conducted with a fair amount of decorum and reason- able attention to business. It was rather too much to expect the boys to be good ALL night though, and on thc mattel of Nuwarra Road they suffered a sad reversion to type. j It arose out of the Engineer's report. In it he said that Nuwarra Road had been prepared for priming, which had been arranged for Monday 18th, but been delayed by rain. Aid. Killinger said that he thought that before thc Engineer primed a road he should get in touch with thc Works Committee. He would personally like to have a look at a road bsfore the Engineer touched it. The Mayor: Oh well, it's the Engin- eer's pigeon, Aid. Killinger. I know plenty of you gentlemen have had prac tical experience. 1 Certain Alderman: I move that the Engineer be asked to contact the...

PEEPS IN THE PAST No. 1 [Newspaper Article] — The Leader — 28 November 1946

PEEPS IN THE PAST No. 1 Reading the advertisement oí Messrs. Cole in this issue, in which they offer Xmas wines and spirits iii dczen lots, reminded us to look up another Cole advertisement inserted by the founder of the firm. Mr. J. Cole in a local news- paper over fifty years ago. A half-column in length, the ad is headed "To Meet the Hard Times" and goes on, "J. Cole, Baker and Grocer. Mocre Street. Liver- pool, is offering 41b of sugar or 4 loaves of bread with each llb of his 2/- tea. Also 1/- in the £ and 'G in the 10/ for all cash purchases over the counter and all weekly payments of accounts." Ic must create a nostalgic effect in the minds cf these housewives able to remember th? last lines cf Mr. Cole's ¡ ad: "Splendid asortment of teas from 1/3 to 2/- per pound." » $ * Sixty years ago. the leading produce merchant of Liverpool was Mr. John Thaen. Born in Holdsworthy in 1863 and a farmer in the district all his life until he opened his produce shop in 1883 he was also a woo...
