It was received a fortnight ago, but has been accidentally mislaid. Department of Land and Public Works, Sydney, 15th October, 1858. Sir — With reference to the petition, addressed to the Honorable the Legislative Assembly, and presented by you to the Secretary for Lands and Public Works, on the 6th instant, from certain inhabitants of the Moreton Bay District, praying for funds for the repair of the line of road between Ipswich and Drayton ; I am   directed to state that, in the opinion of Mr. Secretary Robertson, the petitioners were, doubtless, unaware that the sum of fifty pounds per mile — the higheat rate of allowance — had been already appropriated out of the General Road Vote for the present year, for the repair of the road from Brisbane to Drayton; and also that five hundred pounds has been specially granted for that portion t...

Hordpcai Payne, a saddler, doing business in South Ninth-street, Philadelphia, was called 10.V0 from his workshop one Saturday morning, by a messenger, who brought the melancholy intelligence that his wife, Barbara, had taken arsenic for the purpose of committing enicide, and was then at the point of death. He hastened to her bedside, and found her in more agony of mind than body. In onr hut issne the matter under the above heading having by'some mysterious' accident got transposed and jnmbled together, in a manner known] only to those initiated in printing, from an unfdiotd manuscript, we reprint the article in our fourth page, in jn&tice to'Mn. Shaw, whose contributions, owing to his great experience in sheep farming will b-; cheerfnlly inserted in onr columns for the benefit of the Hockmasters generally ; indeed, they ought to feel indebted to him for the able and practical winner which he has drawn attention to the ftnbiect. We have heard first-rate judges of Sheep and Wool express their approval of Mr. Shaw's treatise.
