Masonic Burial. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 29 October 1897

Masonic Burial. The United Grand Lodge of Ziew South Wales of Freemasons, although a powerful social body, does not often come prominently 'before the public notice. But it accords, through its subordinate lodges, the much ap preciated : nonor, when, unfortunately, a mem ber of the Craft is gleaned :by the reaper of Death, of Masonic burial. It must, and in many cases does, uphold the ritual which is the beauty of its ceremonials. An insipec or ol 1 workings— a member of the Grand Lodge ~is^ delegated to inspect all ' ceremonial work, (ahd ' we recommend that some better supervision be made than appears to be the rule (judging by . recent instancGs) in this sacred and public' con- ;; liection. Every Jew — and we write feelingly — is ^nmd of (next to his Judaism) being a. Freemason, and esteems the honors of the Fraternity. Therefore, we consider it a 'duty to emphasise the subject of the sacredness of the last' rites of Freeu asonry, and to prevent any incompetent administration of ...

A True Mason is a Good Citizen. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 29 October 1897

A True Mason is a Cood Citizen. .We notice quite often that Masons appear to feel called upon to say something in public in defence of Masonry. This js to be regretted. The conduct of Masons should be their vindica tion of the Order— its surest protection from assaults of its* enemies, and against detraction and denunciation. Hostiliij^. cannot impair the. influence of the Fraternity while the mem bers observe in practice the sublime precepts of their ancient and hoi orable Order.. We should eveisbear . in mind that. ' 'action s speak louder than words,' especially so in greater force when the actions are just and true, and' the words ;f&Xse~:rjahd: in revilement. While such is the conduct of Masons the shafts of malice and vituperation cannot Tiarrh the Order, nor im pare its influences as an- a gent, for good and for the promotion of the happiness of 'alt within the range of its benificent influence. . Due circum spection is an essential characteristic of true Masonry, and...

The Zionist Congress. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 29 October 1897

The Zionist Congress. The event':\Vhich had been, loo.ked forward to with s'o much interest in a large section of the Jewish people, and severely criticised in anticipation, by another sec tion, arrived— the Zionist ' Congress. When it is re membered that the movement— which is the acquisition of Palestine and its conversion into #, Jewish State — was advocated in the pamphlet_writren by Dr. Theodore Herzl as the remedy against' the prevailing antiSemi tism, it world seem as the irony ot tate tnat tne con gress should have assembled in Basle. For is not Basle in Switzerland, and did not anti-Semitism break out in a very pronounced form a few years ago, when through persistent agitation Shechita was prohibited ? Let not the reader, however, imagine that the Jewish congrega tion, and its thoroughly orthodox Rabbi, Dr. Cohn, are obliged to eat trifa meat. Jewish ingenuity has driveu a carriage and pair through the prohibition sanctioned by the authorities. Animals are killed kosher at ...
