Vice-president Thompson was in the chair. The secretary presented the balance sheet, which showed a credit balance of £15 9/2. The arrangements for the Friendly Socities* Picnic to be held at Victor Harbor on Saturday, February i2 were finalised. OBITUARY. Mr. John Laver. The late Mr. John Laver was born at Bleadney, Somersetshire, England, on March 28, 1849. He served his apprenticeship as a draper, and after spending several years in Canada, came to South Australia 50 years ago. Mr. W. Barber, of Mount Barker, was in, need of a draper to take the place of'Mr. Goodlifte, who was leaving, and Mr. Hayward, of John Martin & Co., of Adelaide, recommended Mr. Laver for the position, whieli he accepted and came to Mount Barker on January IS, 1878, Here he joiued the Bri tannia Lodge. M.U., and his connection with the order goes back to Septem ber 26, 1881. A lengthy period of^ service was also given to the institute" i with which he acted as a member of j the committee for over 20 years. MOUNT BARKER DAY, 1927. ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL APPEAL. The committee of the third Mount Barker Day Appeal have every reason to be pleased -with the result of the : appeal launched on Monday, when the most successful of the three ciays ob- . served for the same purpose was con ducted in the Mount Barker Agricul tural Society's grounds, kindly loaned for the occasion. The proceeds, which are to be divided amongst the Mount Barker Soldiers' Memorial Hos pital (50 per cent.). Institute (30 per cent), and Progress Association (20 per cent.) should, when all moneys are In, exceed those of the two jtre vious eflorts. The gate takings dur ing the afternoon amounted to well over £40, and money was spent freely at the stalls erected in the spacious pavilion, and stall holders had a very busy time.
