BULK HANDLING. [Newspaper Article] — Swan Hill Guardian and Lake Boga Advocate — 26 February 1914

BULK HANDLING. A board was recently appointed to inqure into the question of the bulk handling of grain in Western Australia. The following embraces some of the board's opinions: The board found that if the sys tem of bulk handling were adopted no change would be necessary in the methods of harvesting, but that there would have to be a change in the nature of the receptacles in which the harvested grain is placed. The provision of farm granaries would become necessary, but, once con structed, they would last for many years, and it was considered that their intial cost would not be greator than that of.providing perishable bags for two years. Not only is the price of bags steadily advancing, but the use of bags involves serious losses of grain that bulk handling will stop. Eighty per cent. of the wheat re beived in the United Kingdom is now handled in bulk, and all the great ports are already equipped with taci lities for handling, the cost being much lower than when the grain is put...

AUSTRALIA'S CARNIVAL CUP DAY AT MELBOURNE [Newspaper Article] — Swan Hill Guardian and Lake Boga Advocate — 26 February 1914

AUSTRALIA'S CARNIVAL CUP DAY AT 1MZELBOURNE The great social season has arrived (writes the Rev. F. C. Spurr, in "The Christian World," Deceinber 18). Everybody who is anybody must now go to milliner, dressmaker, tailor, and bootmaker and henceforward, until the end of the season, appear in pub lic places with the great. Dinners, luncheons, "five o'clocks," balls, and every kind of reunion serve to assemble our new artistocracy. Go vernment House, of course, sets the pace and the fashion. It is the ambi tion of all who aspire to a place am ongst the chosen to be received at Government House. It is intensely interesting in a new country like this to watch the evolu tion of the aristocracy. The process is very rapid. That old idea about ten generations being necessary to make a gentleman has no counten ance in this part of the world. Ten years, or less, now suffice. QUESTION OF MONEY It Is all a question of moneybags, and money is made with great ease and rapidity in Australia-at leas...

F.A.Q. OF WHEAT. [Newspaper Article] — Swan Hill Guardian and Lake Boga Advocate — 26 February 1914

F.A.O. OF WHEAT. An important discussion concerning the New South Wales f.aq. standard of wheat took place at the meeting of the Farmers' and Settlers' As sociation at Wagga. 'A letter was received fro~n the Harden branch, asking Wagga to support it in in sisting on a 6I1lb. f.a.q. standard for wheat until next season's standard was fixed. Mr. Lindon pointed out that the wheat on whica the standard was set was usually above the average quality, inasmuch as farmers gener ally sent the best samples early in the season. For the test he favored the bulk handling and grading sys tem, but while they had the f.a.q. standard it should-be fixed in the fairest manner. .He moved that the branch protest to the Chamber of .OCmmerce against the manner of collecting samples. Mr. Mouritz pointed out that in the past season wheat had generally weighed heavily. It was a good thing to have the standard fixed as high as possible. M Cox held that the high-standard was detrimental to the farmers. If the ...

GETTING MEATS FROM OVERSEAS. COLD-STORAGE PROCESS ENABLES WORLD TO LIVE [Newspaper Article] — Swan Hill Guardian and Lake Boga Advocate — 26 February 1914

GETTING MEATS FROM OVERSEAS. ,T. COLD.- STORAGE PROCESS ENABLES WORLD TO LIVE It is little more thani ffty years since-, meat killed abroad' was first brought into England;' ' ::. In 'those days the annual 'produc tion: of beef, mutton, and pork in Great Britain-as per the figures .com piled by Messrs, J, T. Critchelland J. Raymond in their able work, just published, entitled "A History of the Frozen Meat Trade"-was 910,000 tons, while the population was 28, 265,000. Then the price averaged 6.d; per lb. Ten -years later (1871) the price had risen to 8d. per lb.,. and in 1881 it was 8d. Thus the importation. of foreign meat from cattle-rearing countries became a matter for important con sideration in England, 'and atten tion became riveted. on :the means of adequately preserving such: food: in its "raw state. Many processes were patented, and one treatment was the .dipping of the meat into a bisulphide 'of lime solu tion. It was contended that :any thing 'of animal origin, 'from a be...

MANURES FOR WHEAT. 1 Sti RIVAL SYSTEMS* 0. Writing in the "Weekly Times" Mr. A. H. ienard says:- . The average farmer is well supplied c; with knowledge of the area of agri culture, but is. suffering .from short . supply of knowledge of the, science 'of farming. The science of·.arniing' is simply knowledge of the right system -. of using manures so as to secure the largest yields possible without injury 1 to the land. The principle'-bf manura - ing is right, but the fault lies in lack v of discrimination-in usi ig manures.' The t. science of using. manures is that par ticular one of which a full knowledge t is essential to.the prosperity of Aus- h tralian agriculture,· for it hiolds the i secret of production at the lowest pos sible cost of the largest possible s .quantities and the lhghest, possible qualities of produce. SOWING OF LUCERNE. THE BEST TIME. [Newspaper Article] — Swan Hill Guardian and Lake Boga Advocate — 2 March 1914

80WING OF LUCERNE. THE BEST TIME. The bost time to sow lucerne, if the weather is at all favorable, is during the early autumn. The earlier the seed is sown after the break in the weather, while the soil still retains the warmth which is imparted to it during the summer the better. The seed should not be watered immediately after sowing, as the caking of the soil which is almost certain to follow nullifies the work that has been done in the preparation of the fine seed bed necessary for the small seed. Water should not be applied to the young plants until. they are sufficiently advanced in growth to well cover the ground. The autumn sowing obviates the need of harmful waterings, as there is usually enough moisture in the soil to germinate the seed, and enough in the atmosphere, with the heavy night dews to keep. the young plants moving along. Applying irrigation water during the winter is no detriment to the well-being of the lucerne, unless followed by continuous rain; but that is ...

THE LUCERNE MARKET. H. S. K. WARD'S REPORT. [Newspaper Article] — Swan Hill Guardian and Lake Boga Advocate — 2 March 1914

THE LUCERNE MARKET. -4- H. S. K. WARD'S REPORT. Mr. H. S. K. Ward, produce minr chant, reports as follows under date 25th February: I have to report that lucerne is coming forward freely on the Mel bourno marker, hay being gcnerally rather in excessive supply, and sales are diflicult to effect at full values. It is pleasing to report, however, that lucerne meceived by me yesterday from three Swan Hill growers, Messrs. E. A. Ryland, M1. MPCaw, and t..Olsen, was sold at the top value for lucerne hay this season, all these consignments be ing quitted at £4 per ton, cx rails. The consignments of lucerne hay re ferred to are about the best I have reen this season. Rochester lucerno hay is arriving F.t the rate of about 4 trucks daily, and the grovers there are mostly making the mistake of allowing the crop to stand too long before cutting, and they are also press ing out of the stacks, w\ith the result that the lucerne is not as leafy as it should be, and it is selling at £3 12s 6d to £3...
