§3tc "(totct[it (pamgioir. Vita tine Merit nort ail. BLACKALL, SATURDAY, NOV. 29. IT is a Briton's privilege to grumble, and wliile British blood circulates in our veins, and British customs govern oar lives, we shall retain tlie privilege we arc said to possess. If there is one misfor tune more than another which excites onr murmuring discontent, it is that which impartially visits all, and is known as general depression of trade. A most peculiar phenomenon is this depression of trade. It seems always to exist. If not flourishing in this colony, it is to l>e found in most of the others; and we do not remember any time during the past ten years when the public newspapers ever agreed that the course of affairs was flourishing all over Australia ; and a cursory perusal of the leading journals in all the colonies at the present time will serve to show £hat in every one of them the "hard times" arc deplored, and the country is regarded as in a very dull and stagnant condition. Rambles 'Round Town. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 29 November 1879

Rambles 'Bound Town. BY "A B06HMA.K." SATURDAY right in Queen-street, what a sight fur a buahman accustomed to fee the same half doten familiar faces day nf:er da;, from year's end to year's end, or perhaps on an occasional visit to the nearest town-lvp, lie ficesabig crowd of, it may be, 40 or 60 people, reo.t of whom lie ia personally ac quainted with. Here, he sees hundreds pass ing and repassing and not one glance of recognition, strangers all. Truly, there is no solitude like a great crowd. When one is far away in the western interior without another human being within miles. he does not feci to lonely; for, although he has no one to speak to, except bis horec or hit dug, he expects nothing else, but when there arc hundreds of his fellow creatures around him, and he can't tpeak to any of them, although tliey all teem to know one another, it feems as if a s-pcll n-c.-c on him, which doomed him, the solitary busbman, to be among men and yet not of them. The Flying Pieman. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 29 November 1879

The Flying Pieman. Ik these days of extraordinary pedestrian j matches die feats of Billy King, more often I known as the " Fifing Pieman," Imve almost J faded out of the mcmoiy of men. Some , account therefore cf this |>eculiar man and j his performances may prove not nltogcthcr 1 uninteresting to our readers. King was born '' in London in March, 1BU7. and was the ' eldest son of Frani in King, Uttj., at one time Paymaster of Accounts in the Treasury at Whitehall. His father intended him for the Church, but it soon appeared that bis innate love of field sports and boisterous recreations was not liefiuing the sacred office, and he entered into partner-hip with Smith and Simpson, stock nud shnrcbrokerc iu London. He did nut long remain con nected with this ^rm; for fancying the busiuess was getting into difficulties he told i his share, and obtained a situation as cleric in the Treasury Office in the Tower ot Lon don. The Kelly Anniversary. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 29 November 1879

The Kelly Anniversary. ATTENTION has been called this week in tlie press to the humiliRtingcircumstance that we have passed the anniversary of thedayon which Police-scrgcaut Kennedy and his two follow truojiers were murdered by the Kelly gong. That terrible outrage (says the Auttralatian) gave a great shock to the feeling of security previously felt by the colony, but how much greater would hare been tbe Itlowhod it liecn foreseen that within the year these daring scoundrels would twice make raids on neigh bouring towns and plunder two hanks, and that the efforts of tbe police to effect their capture would up to the end of the twelve months be utterly without result. If the occurrence of suck a crime was felt no n degradation to the colon}', how much more degradation is involved in the fact (hat it was committed with the most total impunity. We presume that no one would venture to deny that the result of this affair lias been an cx|xwurc and demonstration of the utter inefficiency o...
