PREVENTION OP BUSH FIRES. Mn. LOCKHART MOUTON'S exhibition of the model of Iiis .apparatus for prevent- ing bush fires has had tho effect of in- ducing almost every person in town connected with tho pastoral interest to inspect it, as it lies on the table of the strangers' room in Scott's Hotel. The inventor has been frequently in attendance to explain its working, and bis expositions on th it head have been eagerly received. Tho trouble he hos taken in that respect being, like his open surrender of tho fruit of his ingenuity and perseverance in experi- ment, wholly gratuitous, it bas perhaps been the moro willingly acknowledged. APOLOGIES. (From the Saturday Review.) [Newspaper Article] — Rockhampton Bulletin — 24 February 1872

APOLOGIES. (From Hie Saturday Reriein.) ALL volunteered flueut apologies Imve some mixture ot' a lio iu them. No perBOU who plans apologies plans to speak Kio plain truth. If ho is scrup- ulous, and alejo ingenious, lie contrives a veneer of fact; but the substance is false-nn actuating principle or motive is kept out of sight. Nobody who is fair aud above-board in conscience and aims has tho apologising impulse. Charlotte Bronte, in her favourite M. Paul, notices its absence as a noble characteristic. Apology never dropped her slippery oil on his lips-never proffered by his pen her coward feints and paltry nullities ; ho would give neither a stone nor an CXCUBC; neither a scorpion nor a dis- appointment." The trick of apologising obscures tho very perception of worth and value, the distinction between bread and a stone. If these paraders knew themselves they would know their neighbours better; but as they are scarcely consc...
