CLUCKS. [Newspaper Article] — The Lockhart Review and Oaklands Advertiser — 3 January 1911

CLUCKS. Disease often comes as a result of over-crowding. Early hatched pullets if kept growing all summer, will com mence laying reasonably early in winter. . A few teaspoonfuls of Epsom salts in the , drinking water of , the stock birds will keep them from contracting disease. .AH ducklings that are old enough for market should be sold. They will not pay for their keep if kept too long , unless they are for stock. Don't over-crowd your birds in the warm weather, or you may have catarrh or gapes amongst your poultry. -Flowers ; of sulphur given in'fche proportion of 'a teaspoonful for ev ery three birds 'in their soft fbod twice a week, will hdp the ^ forma tion.. of new feathers. It must not bergiven on wet days- as it has . a laxative effect. Keep a nice bed of dry straw in your coops wnue tne weather is wet. Ducklings in particular, need a dry, warm bed, also shade them from the sun, or they will lose the use of their legs. The silver-laced Wyandotte is admittedly one of the mos...

PROFITABLE CROSSING. [Newspaper Article] — The Lockhart Review and Oaklands Advertiser — 3 January 1911

PROFITABLE CROSSING. Several points are to be gained by judicious crossing, chief among which . is'' hardihood and vigor. ; r Cross-bred birds are better able to withstand unsuitable conditions such as exposed quarters, than pure-breds. One of two varieties are extremely hardy, such as the ? leghorn and redcap, and they will -. thrive amid the most adverse sur roundings, but as a general rule a cross is 'far hardier than a pure bred. Another advantage of crossing is that it is possible to minimise defects of an otherwise useful variety. Again, it is pos sible in crossing to combine in one bird the good qualities of two breedr ; if a table bird and layer are mated together the progeny . : will probably be general-purpose fowls. A mistake that is very often made in crossing is the mating together of two varieties possessing similar characteristics. -This ^serves no use ful purpose whatever, except to give: added vigor , to the offspring. - It i^s useless to cross, say, a Wy andotte an...

[?] INCUBATOR BITS. In a room which is at all cold do not turn the eggs more than twice a day, and even then you should do it as quickly as possible. In a warm room you can turn them three ? or four times a day, but it musts be done regularly at. stated times each .day. If you find that the temperature of the eggs is below 101 degrees at turning, time do not turn the eggs. Find out the reason for the deficient . .. temperature and correct it. Do not turn until proper temperature has been restored for some hours. : Do not ovecrowd the egg tray. Only put in as many as can be contu /'ortably handled, and do not set any eggs that are not well formed and of good size. Be quite sure the eggs are clean before they- are put in. A good wash, never did anybody any harm, and it won't injure the eggs. Have place quite dark at hatching time. If the machine has only a single glass door cover it with something to keep, out the light. This is necessary to keep the chicks quiet and prevent crowding ...

HORSE TALK. [Newspaper Article] — The Lockhart Review and Oaklands Advertiser — 3 January 1911

- ; HORSE TALK. 'Dbn't let the colts and young, hor ses1 run down on 'short: pastures; it don't pay. r T Colts' should always be kept g rowing! _ ' Good grooming improves the ap pearance of a horse and also helps to keep him healthy. Style in draft and road horses means money every time. - - Attend meetings of horsemen if you can, particularly if good horses are to |^e on exhibition. Learn all you can about horses and the kind most needed in your part of the country, and then try to do some thing to supply that need. Give the horses^ some carrots, ap- J plies or potatoes two or three times a week. Some people call this fus v sing, but it pays. Don't let the breeding mare get down to skin and bone. It is bad for her and bad for her colt. Give her extra, feed and care; Heavy draft teams hauling heavy loads keep in good condition when V kept at the fast-walking gait, and accomplish more than when trotted part of the time. Collars should not be changed from one horse to another any more...

The Farmer. ZINC AND OTHER BUCKETS IN THE DAIRY. [Newspaper Article] — The Lockhart Review and Oaklands Advertiser — 3 January 1911

The Farmer. — — — ♦ ? ZINC AND OTHER BUCKETS IN THE DAIRY. 1-,. 1 ' There are three kinds of buckets in use in the dairy. They consist v ' J- ^ of zinc, wood j and tin. The zinc '* , bucket is a favorite because it is the cheapest, and that is the only thing - _ - that can be said in its favor. They are well enough for carrying; water, ! \ »- but bad to put milk in, as the milk ? ' gradually adheres to them, and, un \ - less very carefully and frequently ' ? ? . cleansed, they become unsweet and - taint the milk. When the milk is ? a little out of order, and the cause ; - ' is puzzling, it may often be found * I in the zinc bucket. Years ago the wood bucket was much more in use -V' inthe dairy than now. It, too, is * somewhat difficult to keep perfectly sweet and clean without a great deal ' - of labour. The best of all buckets is the dairy is what' are known as tin ned steel, or a cheaper sample come under the name of plain steel. They are of all sizes, to hold from ten ✓ to twenty...
