Hardwood from Afar. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Express and Casino Kyogle Advertiser — 13 January 1905

Hardwood from Afar. Under this hrading Allen .Taylor and Co., of Sydney, writes: — With reference to a paragraph on the above subject in the ' Daily Telegraph ' of semi-humorous intent, there is not much fear of karri and jarrah being 'proved superior to all eastern hard woods.' It is rather EigniKceut, for instancr, just, now that our forest ninlinrrnnv wliirli is almost iilnntinnl with, and if anything superior to, jarrah, has been cut out of the list of first-class timbers for sleeper purposes l-y the Public Works Department. Jarrah is a good timber, but that four or five anyhow of ours are superior for car-building, wood-paving, piles, and sleeper purposes, is being clearly clemousfialid just now throughout the world's markets, and .the result of this with the jurrah combination has been (vide their balance-shee dis cussed fully in Londou in September) such as to make fhem stir themselves to hold their own. The Westralian timber people have the advantage of being united, and the...

The Same Old Lie. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Express and Casino Kyogle Advertiser — 13 January 1905

The Same Old Lie. -? Thk latest enterprise of the English weekly Press is to offer a weekly prize for the best 'chestnut.' To the fol lowing, contributed by a lady,' one of the prizes Ims been awarded : — ' A ' young Oxford student one day re ceived nu .unexpected visit from his ?pretty sister, and was very indignant that she came without a chaperon. ' Look here,' said the young man, 'I will not have any of the lellows see vou in mv rooms, so if an vone knocks at that door you just get behind that screen.' In a few minutes a knock was heard, and the girl ran behind fhe screen as her brother went to open the door. An old gentleman stood on. the threshold, who, after profusely apolo gising for his intrusion, said, 'I am just home from Australia, and many years ago I occupied these rooms ; would you allow, me, sir, to look at them once again? 'Certainly,' said fhe student; 'come in.' 'Ah!' ex claimed fhe old man, ' everything is just the same. Same old table, same old fireplace, same o...

Honey Bees. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Express and Casino Kyogle Advertiser — 13 January 1905

Honey Bees. Tub 'Farm Journal' says that the most common race of honey bees in the United Slates is probably flie Ger man bee. These are to be found both wild and domesticated. . They are black in colour and are not. very attractive. They winter well and cap their honeycombs: whiter than most other races. They can be handled with fair success by the average person, although they are inclined fo be cross at times and have. n 'disposition to fre qufentlv use their stinprs. Bees of the Cyprian race- liaye produced the largest yield of honey on record from a single colony. They are very yellow in colour, probably ;fhe.inost handsome of all bees, yet they have not become popular among apiarists on account nf their extreme sensitiveness. It is very difficult fo manipulate -them, and at limes they can not even be subdued with smoke. Carniolan bees are grey in colour, and the most gentle of all bees to handle ; are very prolific in deed, more so ilian any other race. The only objection I ha...

Not Seen a Girl for Three Years, Mu. b'osreit Fkasci:, 'who has been touring Canada, tells of his meeting with an Oxford man in fhe Far West. 'Three years had rubbed all the polish off him ; his liimds had become big and heavy; there was fhe slowness of speech that comes fo every man who lives in close touch with nature; a cbviiiiii ruowrl indenoiulciirn was in his manner. As we were dining fo gelher in an hotel he told me, with modest enthusiasm, of his life, twenty five miles from the neighbouring ranch. Two yuung;laclics, accompany ing their parents on a holiday tour, entered the dining-room. The lyes of the rnnchm«.n followed them. He laughed softly,' and fhen said, 'Do you know, those are the tit si girls I have seen for nearly three yi jus !'

Government Grading of Butter. (Per favour of the It. It. Express.) By J. H. C. Harpkk.. No. III. The mnin arguments put forward and usod with great force by the speakers at '??? the Casino meeting was, that in their opinion, nothing should bo done to thwart tho efforts of private concerns, and to boil down all that was said amounts to this — grow our own find fight the mar kets single-handed. They had evidently not read the glaring irregularities and trickery of certain speculators who have been in the habit of walking dowiv Collins-street, donning long silk hats and poping as benefactors, handling our butter in a manner which in tho sworn evidence before that (iommiunion shows clearly that the unfortunate dairymen were being robbed from the time the milk left the cow till tho butter entered the mouths of these unprincipled gen tlemen of the largo cities.. I want to know whore all our second class butter goes, and whether it is ever sold as lirst-cIiiBS ? If the dairy farmers of tho...

Development of the Iron Industry. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Express and Casino Kyogle Advertiser — 13 January 1905

Development of the Iron Industry. Satisfaction is felt in various quar ters, indeed Ihrougliont the whole State (says tlie SydnVy correspondent of the ' Austrnlasimi') at- tbe definite move made by the Minister of Works to encourage the development of the iron industry. Mr. Lee has called for tenders for flie supply of iron and steel required by the Government, to be produced from Australian ores. In connection with this latest attempt to encouraged'! manufacture of iron and .steel locally, a report from the Go vernment geological surveyor, Mr. .1. B, Jaquet, written in 18U.1, has just been republished, giving a highly fa vourable opinion as to the qualify of the iron oro deposits of this State. The opinion lias long prevailed among certain experts that our iron ores are of foo low grade to be made payable without the aid of Tnsmauian' ore. Mr. Jaquet holds quite a different view, and a more recent, examination of the deposits in the western district has enabled him to produce a fur...

Treasury Books. Tjik oflicial Recounts issued by tlie New Sou tli Wrales Treasury for tlie last tlnee months of 1904, fallow that tlie con solidated vevenue receipts totalled £3,002,050 3sV)d, of which Hie Fed eral Government provided £504,004 10s Id, tbe Lands Department £414, 892 19.S 8d, and the railways and tramways £1,509,231 7s Od — so that revenue from other .sources only amounted to some £884,000. The total amount derived by taxation, in cluding Customs and Excise, duties, was a little over £712,000, or yearly £2,150,000. We often hear folk talk of the heavy burden of taxation in New South Wales; but these figures go to show that, the total impost for tho whole population is considerably less than £2 per head. The expenditure during the same period was £3,023,581- '2s 0d,' some £20,000 odd in excess of receipts. Included therein is £773,890 15s Id for railways and tramways, and for special appropriation — a term which coveis a multitude of sins — no let.s than £1,057,032 4s ...

OUR SYDNEY LETTER. (from ouk coHiti:svoni)Esr ) SriiNEY, Monday. 'J IIK-XKWCASI I,K lUmCUM'V. Tin: Arbitration Court has.nt last an opportunity of dcnioiibtrntiug its ability to deal with a really big strike. Tbe coal mines of Newcastle have been laid idle in consequence of a 10 per cent reduction in wages. Tbe t educ- tion steins to be, necessary in view ^ of the fall which lias taken place in tbe^ price of the commodity. The men, however, who clamonred for the es tablishment of a sliding scale when prices were rising^ utterly object to the operation of the scale now that prices have fallen. No sliding scale will suit them if it slides more than one way. Nevertheless it is not the miners who are ostensibly on the strike; but. the ' wheelers,' who take the coal from them and wheel it to the hoisting machinery. These are mostly young fellows, alwajs eager to have a brush with established authority. More than once they have 'caused trouble at particular collcries, but this time their ...
