Police look into death of Arizona freshman College Press Exchange TUCSON, Ariz. (CPX) - Police are investigating the death of a freshman at the University of Arizona who may have fallen down a staircase after taking LSD. Brian Scott Balcer, an 18-year-old engineering major from Ann Arbor, Mich., died Monday, nine days after he was found lying unconscious at the bottom of some stairs just off of a campus courtyard. The student said she went into a building for only a moment and returned outside to find Balcer lying at the bottom of a staircase. Two celebrities lose fight to keep nude photos off web By David Rosen/.weig Los Angeles Times LOS ANGELES •- Former "Bay watch" actress Pamela Anderson Lee and talk-radio therapist Laura Schlessinger, a staunch advocate of conservative sexual mores, both lost court battles Monday to keep nude pictures of them out of circulation. In separate cases in federal court, lawyers for the two women tried to block a Seattle-based Internet company from disseminating 12 nude photos of Schlessinger taken two decades ago and a sexually explicit honeymoon video of Anderson Lee and her now estranged husband, rock star Tommy Lee. Both personalities had filed mo tions against Internet Entertainment Group, which bills itself as the No. 1 purveyor of sexually oriented material on the Web. Neither Schlessinger nor Anderson Lee attended the proceedings. In Schlcssinger'scase, U.S. District Judge Dean Pregcrson lifted a restraining order he had issued Oct. 23 after Internet Entertainment posted ph...

Tales of hit men, adultery, intrigue emerge in Delaware murder trial [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 5 November 1998

Tales of hit men, adultery, intrigue emerge in Delaware murder trial By Craig Whitlock The Washington Post WILMINGTON. Del. -Thomas J. Capano is a liar and a three-timing philanderer who wrapped an anchor around his young lover's corpse before tossing it into the ocean -- this according to his own defense attorneys, who are trying to spare him the death penalty. On the surface, the odds seem to be against Capano, a rich bond lawyer and powerful figure in Delaware politics whose much-publicized murder trial began last week. The case has transfixed Wilmington's close-knit political society with its numerous disclosures of sordid intrigue, including allegations of multiple mistresses and hired hit men. Capano, 49, stands accused of killing Anne Marie Fahey, a 30-year-old secretary to Gov. Thomas R. Carper, D. in a jealous fit two years ago because she tried to break off their af tair. Prosecutors have won the grudging, cooperation of two of Capano's brothers and expect them to ...

Court: tabloid defamed farmer by repeating charges [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 5 November 1998

Court: tabloid defamed farmer by repeating charges By Maura Dolan Los Angeles Times SAN FRANCISCO - In a widely watched media case, the California Supreme Court decided Monday that the Globe, a supermarket tabloid, defamed a Bakersfield farmer by repeating a book's false charge that the man was the real assassin of Sen. Robert F. Kennedy. The tabloid, backed by many mainstream media, had argued that if it accurately and neutrally reported charges being made in a book or other public controversy, it should not be held liable. There are certainly occasions when in a heated public controversy, charges are being leveled and the media would be remiss in failing to report to the public that those allegations are being made, even when the media do not think they are true. Joshua Kollun, Khalid Khawar's lawyer But the high court disagreed, unanimously upholding a $1,175 million libel verdict. Khalid Khawar, a grape and citrus farmer, was a private figure, and the media are not prote...

All-U Day at State College a success once again [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 5 November 1998

All-U Day at State College a success once again By Mike Coursey staff writer The scoreboard at Beaver Stadium read, "All-University Day. A celebration of Penn State pride across the commonwealth," which was exactly right. All-University day (or All-U day, as it is more commonly called) at State College was established to bring students from all of the University's branch campuses together and demonstrate a sense of unity. While many students may have planned on going to the game for the usual reasons, the added incentive of all ot the commonwealth campuses being there was a bonus. According to Victoria Freille. of the Weekly Collegian , "the role Commonwealth Campuses will play in All-University Day on October 31. will be a prime issue." Council of Commonwealth Student Government's Director Mike D'Ausilio said, "CCSG was able to accomplish much of the planning of All-U Day in one meeting." At halftime the CCSG had two representatives from each campus, with a huge blue banner...

Louise Kaplan visits Behrend By Lisa Calvin staff writer Dr. Louise Kaplan provided a lecture on Thursday, October 29 concerning her theories of behaviorisl biases, primitive notions of normality and abnormality, the perversions of males and females, gender roles and the pressures of societal conventions. Dr. Kaplan is the author of several books which investigate these issues. She is the editor of the magazine American Imago and is a faculty member of the Chicago Center for Psychoanalysis. According to Dr. Kaplan, sexuality is not the singular focus of perver sions. Instead, it is a minor feature. and exemplifies the perverse qualities of fixity and desperation. Wildlife at Behrend By Kristie Vitron staff writer If you read the Police and Safety Re port on a regular basis, you have certainly noticed the abundance of complaints concerning wild, domestic or farm animals roaming around campus. Although it is a common occurrence to .spot a woodchuck. deer, dog or even a donkey here at Penn State Behrend, it is usually not a threat to student health according to Bill Donahue, Police and Safety Manager. According to this semester's Police and Safety reports, there have only been a few sightinizs of ani mals acting strangely. However, there have been no con finned rabies eases. A rabid animal's behavior can be characterized by increased salivation, seizures, paralysis, or all around abnormal behavior. Because the rabies virus is transmitted through lining. The set throughout the entire play is in the kitchen of their home, which is the center of insanity and human chaos lo these three sisters. [Website of the week [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 5 November 1998

[Website of the week By Mike Coursey Staff Writer Many people already know that shopping on the internet is gaining popularity. But shopping online for a car? There are a few sites that allow net surfers to do just that. These sites also offer insurance rates, blue book values of one's car, and other useful information. Two of the major websites that buy, sell and trade autos are Autobytel.com and Autotrader. One of the many useful tools of these websites is a feature that allows people to track down the car they want in their general vicinity, or move the search to varying degrees. Here's an example: if one wanted a 1964 Ford Mustang, and wanted to pay between $5,000 and $ 15,000 dollars, he or she could search for a particular car to suit him or her. In addition, one could search for a car being sold in his or her local area. This process enables the consumers to have some leverage when they approach a car salesman. They can compare the prices from the ...

Teletubby toy craze hits Behrend By Nicole McGee staff writer Alien-like stuffed animals w ith televisions on their stomachs and antennas on their heads are changing the television world we once knew. They're taking over Sesame Street The program is called Teletubbies and ratings prove that among children, it is replacing Sesame Street in popularity. Individual characteristics include color, size, name, and the shape of the antenna on the Teletubby's head. On the television program, they play in a field and watch television on one another's stomachs. Though the British program has only been airing in the U.S. for nine months, sales of items related to these creatures are predicted to hit $600 million this holiday season. Flutie's NFL troubles behind him; Bills' success is next step [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 5 November 1998

Flutie's NFL troubles behind him; Bills' success is next step Out of Bounds JASONSNYDER Buffalo Bills' quarterback Doug Flutie is leaving more than just an unsuccessful past in the National Football League behind him. At the midway point of the 1998 NFL season, Flutie has already forgotten his troubled background, and is now leaving in his tracks some of the league's best pass rushers, quarterbacks and teams on his way to the ultimate football dream, a Super Bowl championship. Now it may be hard to associate the Buffalo Bills with a Super Bowl championship, seeing as how they are most remembered for their infamous Super Bowl flops in the first half of this decade. The early '90s were a joke when mid-January rolled around and the Bills received their annual "Super Bowl Slaughter" by the NFC's most dominant team. These continuous embarrassments gave the country a team to laugh at and love to see lose. Even Bills' fans themselves must have hoped for some other AFC team to...
