Soccer team shows mid-season improvement by Rob Rejmaniak Capitol's soccer team recorded its first win of the 1983 season, beating Lancaster Bible College by a score of 4 to 0 on Saturday, September 24. The win was the first ever taken by a Capitol soccer team. Prior to the win, Capitol played Penn State Berks campus to a 1 to 1 tie. "The team has improved with each game we've played," says winger Tom Weidemann. Weidemann's words proved true as Capitol took on a much stronger Eastern team last week and held them scoreless for over an hour before finally losing 4 to 0. "The game with Eastern College showed how well we've developed as a team," says Head Coach Bill Miles, "we took on a four year school with scholarship . athletes and gave them <a real run for their money." Haley After six games, the women's volleyball team has opened the season with a two and four record. - ' -' Although the squad was defeated in Delaware by Wilmington College on September 17, the girls went on to defeat Alvernia College on September 24, by the scores of 15-4, 15-3 ' , and 15-8. Bowlers to open season against Navy this weekend [Newspaper Article] — Capitol Times — 20 October 1983

Bowlers to open season against Navy this weekend By Bud Smith The Capitol Campus bowling team will be opening its 1983 season this weekend when they roll against Navy. "This year's bowlers have a better outlook than last year's. The averages are higher and so is the spirit," said Senior bowler, Steve Botcher. This Saturday's match is followed by a road game at Lincoln College. Capitol Campus also maintains an intramural bowling program. The "Fall Guys" maintain a first-place standing with a 19-5 record followed by "Waste Products II," who have a 15-9 record. There are six intramural bowling teams. Other teams in the program include: "Purple Hooters," "Junior Boomers," "Sad Eyes," and "Power Supply." The teams bowl every Wednesday night at 9:15 pm.

Capitol's athletes are school's ambassadors Rob's Reaction A Sports Editorial by Rob Rejmaniak In the past year, Capitol sports have brought a number of pleasant suprises to campus. Last Fall, the cross-country team competed as a varsity sport for the first time since Capitol has been in existence, and won its conference. This year, the team has already repeated as conference champs and has one runner, Joel Hager, who has a chance at "Academic All-American". This past Spring, the baseball team had its finest season, finishing with 17 wins and 12 losses while making the play-offs for the first time in its five-year history. The baseball team proudly honored senior Mike Skurko, who made "Academic All-American", and Head Coach Ron Melchiorre, who was named "Coach of the Year". The team also had four players named to the first team All-District, two players to second team All-District, and one player who received honorable mention. Campus' drinking water safe; DER officials assure By Jerry Trently Capitol Campus' water is safe to drink, according to Department of Environmental Resources (DER) Secretary, Nicholas DeBenedictis. "Everyone would want this figure to diminish to zero.... But the water Is certainly safe." Dave Mashek Deputy Press Secretary, DER DeBenedictis told a contingent of reporters at an October 31 press conference that contaminants believed to be fouling water at the Harrisburg International Airport (HIA) are not affecting water pumped from there to the Capitol Campus. Of eleven wells used by the airport, seven are currently shut down voluntarily as a precautionary measure, while four remaining wells continue to pump about one million gallons of water a day. $98,000 proposal lifts hopes for new elevator By Tony G. Perry Help is on the way for the handicapped and mobility-impaired students of Capitol Campus. University Park has agreed to fund a $98,000 project to replace the freight elevator in the Olmsted building. According to Joseph Kemp, Manager of Maintenance and Utilities Operations, a combination passenger/freight elevator is currently being designed to replace the existing elevator. Work should begin on the structure by next summer, and will take in "excess of 30 days" to complete, Kemp said. Kemp said a proposal for the change was sent to University Park last Spring. The ne\v vehicle will be designed to fit the existing shaft and the work will be done by an independent contractor. Presently, the existing freight elevator is the only means of transportation available for mobility-impaired students to reach the second and third floors and the basement level of the building.
