It required almost a page to describe it on the map , but about six lines of type were sufficient to tell all that was known , or all that one cared to know , about the region which lay almost within speaking distance of our own country , bigger in area than the whole United States , but practically unexplored . Your imagination pictured this region as a frozen wilderness , traversed by ice-bound rivers lacing through pine forests , inhabited only by hardy animals and the few trappers who went there in search of furs . The only marks on the map were pencil dots which indicated stations of the Hudson Bay Co ., or possibly two...

mmW ^_ - —* T M [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 December 1913

mmW ^_ - —* T M Caring for Calves in Winter t Separate the young and growing calves from the older and stronger stock . Some farmers allow cattle of all shapes artf sizes to run together , but where this is done the larger ones naturally crowd the smaller and weaker members out of ti $ most comfortable parts of the winter quarters—even forcing them to spend the severest portion of the night exposed to the weather . This is unprofitable for two reasons , to say nothing of the suffering to which the helpless calves , with their susceptible constitutions , thus are subjected . , They will require more food to keep their bodies warm and offset the detrimental action of the severe cold . Then ,, no matter how much they are fed , the exposure stunts their whole general system to such an extent that their delicate tissues and organs never will develop as they wduld if a steady , undisturbed growth had been maintained from the start . Just notice the herd some morning , if you are feeding t...

^ raSTOlg ^ [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 December 1913

^ raSTOlg ^ Winter Management of Colts How are you going to handle that colt this winter ? Are you going to let him get his feed and shelter from the sunny side of a straw or hay stack , or are you going to give him something to make him grow ? It is all right to rough the stacker steers through the winter as cheaply as possible , but colts should be kept growing . Size is not so important with steers as horses . To get the most money possible out of a draft colt he must have size , and to get the greatest size he must be kept growing from the time he is born until he is mature- Half of a horse s growth is made during the first twelve months of his life . If he doesn t weigh 1 , 000 pounds at the end of the first year he will never make a ton horse . After weaning , the colt should be fed a pound of . grain for each 100 pounds of live weight and all the bright , clean clover hay he will eat A good grain Bm WHEN PROPERLY MANAGED . SUCH COLTS HAVE A FUTURE mixture is % corn , % bran a...

A horse that is past usefulness must be retired . But an old farm can be made new ! The owner of a hundred-acre farm was beating all his neighbors in crops , yet his business was a fizzle . It looked as if hed have to quit the game to make aliving . But he told his troubles to a farm-management expert . The expert got busy and made that farm over from pasture to corncrib . He moved fences , started rotations—did just the things an expert replanning a factory would do . And when he was done the deficit had been turned into a prott . For several years the Department of Agriculture , through its field agents , has been experimenting with various farms , with the owners cooperation , along the lines of sys...

_ toJ _ Ma ^ $ m [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 December 1913

_ toJ _ Ma ^ $ m The Harvest of Ice Every modern farm enterprise requires ice nowadays . Both the dairy and the kitchen make demands which cannot be ignored . Without ice on the farm , we forego not only a great comfort , but an absolute necessity . The farmer who puts up his own harvest device is usually sure to keep cool in summer . The approach of winter makes the harvest a timely topic . The first essential in keeping ice is a good ice house , of which there are many . The floor should be solid , preferably of concrete and perfectly drained . The walls of the house may be of wood or concrete . It is best to have them double with a dead air space between . This dead air space serves as an excellent insulator . The ice house should be well roofed . Ice should be stored carefully , using abundance of sawdust There should be a layer of at least a foot or eighteen GRINDING FEED FOR THE WEEK inches of sawdust between the floor or sides of the house and the first layer of ice . The blo...
