jptflyfoff and Mttttob [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 11 April 1868

jptflyfoff and Mttttob DODGING A SHARK . [ Concluded from Last Issue . ] The first xay of tbe sun found ns at sea again . With our sails swelling with a fresh and invigorating breeze , we passed the point and were bowling away towards our destination ; and by six o clock we entered the month of the lagoon . And now came the aim and object of onr expedition , —the procuring of a snpply of cocoa-nnts . In this genial clime the cocoanut palm grows to an amazing height , usually from sixty to seventy feet ; but , in some instances , if my eyes did not deceive me , they rose to ninety or a hundred . The whole of the stem is clear , that is , without limb or protuberance , and I may saw without bark . At any rate they have what may be called a smooth round trunk ; consequently it requires no little : agility and in- : genuity to climb them . This was not to be done by agiilty alone , as some of our fellows found out ; and here Jones proved himself a man of resource . It was not the first ...

flCRICDLTDRai . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 25 April 1868

flCRICDLTDRai . The Hop Plant and Its Management . In a large hop yard it frequently happens that a portion ofthe crop is lost by becoming too ripe before it can be gathered . To obviate this evil as much as possible , such an assortment of varieties should be made as will produce a suitable succession , so that the product of one part of the garden may be harvested before the hops in another part become fully ripe . It is necessary , too , to have plenty of help and to commence a little before the crop is fully ripe , in order to be abl « to get all harvested before any are spoiled by over-ripeness . So large an amount of the wetgbt of untitled hops , is water that it is necessary that the drying should , not be long delayed , lest heat , and fermentation destroy the value of the crop . Drying is carried on ln kilns , which are generally built of an oblong form , and in two stories , the lower part being occupied by the kiln and the pressroom , and the upper part By the drying floo...

AGRICULTURAL [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural — 25 April 1868

AGRICULTURAL Selections and Condematione . T-v Deep Plowing . At a late meeting of the American Institute Farmers Club , Mr . S . EDWARDS TODD read the following paper : Wc have had trite maxims handed down to us from time Immemorial , ln which deep , plowing has been advocated ; and the subject of plowing deep at all times and in all places , has run like a chain throughout our agricultural literature . We are all zealous advocates of deep tillage . I believe In putting on ^ a heavy double , arid sometimes treble team , arid thrusting in the plow beamdeep even , when the instrument is constructed with a direct reference to thorough pulverization , to the depth of 80 or 40 inches , provided that soil is of a character . to require such deep tillage . I say to one mam , put yorir p ! 6 w Ih beam deep ; and turn-up a new soli that - will yield a more • bountiful crop than was ever before ^ een on that . land . But to another farmer , I say , do notplow-thatland at all . It would be ru...
