Who ' s Who in Berkshires . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 May 1910
Who s Who in Berkshires . Editor s Note : — It may seem strange to print the following article under the head of Who s Who in Berkshires as it might be more properly termed Famous Sows of the Barker Strain but we believe there is no better way of showing the greatness of a man- as a breeder than by chronicling his achievements along breeding lines . The following is a record of which any breeder might Ve proud . Back in the early nineties , there was owned in Indiana a favorite old Berkshire brood sow known as Maid of Wolf Creek 2 d 24159 , a daughter of Count Bruno 14554 , a Gentry bred boar of note and a son of old Duke of Monmouth 11361 . The dam of this sow was a daughter of Sterling 10217 , a leader in his day and a boar bred by Mr . Alex M . Fulford of Maryland . It may well be said that Maid of Wolf Creek 2 d 24159 , was the fouiv dation sow in the herd of I . N . Barker of Thorntown , Ind ., and for that matter , to her might be given the honor of being the foundation sow of...

IT'S UP TO THE BREEDER . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 May 1910
ITS UP TO THE BREEDER . Every Berkshire breeder of any importance who has stock for sale should feel it his duty to support THE BERKSHIRE WORLD in as substantial a way as possible . It is impossible to publish a paper on good wishes and this publication has now been established at quite an expense to the publishers and is in a position where it can and does bring results to its advertisers . The following extracts from three letters received the past month will show you something of what we are doing . These letters are no exception to the general rule of our correspondence but are simply sighted as examples of the results we are getting for those who advertise in our paper . Our rates are very reasonable and we trust that you will write us for full particulars in regard to advertising . You owe it to the breed , to yourself and to the publishers of THE BERKSHIRE WORLD . , Dundee , N . Y . To THE BERKSHIRE WORLD . Gentlemen : You are selling pigs for us faster than we can wean them ...
The Dietrich Swine Book . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 May 1910
The Dietrich Swine Book . Professor Wm . Dietrich of the University of Illinois and of the Illinois Agricultural Experiment Station , at Urbana , 111 ., has written a book on swine breeding , feeding and management . His work has gained for him a worldwide reputation as an authority on the subject of swine husbandry . With splendid training and exceptional qualifications for work of this character he was employed a number of years ago by the University of Illinois as its college and station representative in the field of Swine Husbandry . He has given his entire time for this work except the teaching of one auxiliary course which in itself was fundamental to success in the field of work assigned . In his work in swine feeding by means of original investigation along lines entirely new and peculiar to himself , Professor Dietrich has determined facts of fundamental significance and formulated principles and laws of animal nutrition that promise to revolutionize the entire system of f...
EDITORIAL [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 May 1910
EDITORIAL The Value of a Breed Organ , Primarily of course The Berkshire World is a Berkshire paper . Most of our space is devoted to Berkshire affairs and most of our business is from Berkshire breeders . We intend that it shall always be a stout and loyal champion of the world s best breed of hogs , but we are eager for increasingly larger opportunities to extend the influence of the paper . We have given considerable attention to related interests so that we might make a stronger appeal to general farmers . In other words , there are many farmers who could probably be induced to subscribe for or read The Berkshire World on the ground that it contains from month to month a variety of well selected and well printed matter about other things than Berkshires . If we can get such men on our list we think that we have an excellent chance to make Berkshire breeders of them , for they cannot long read the paper without getting interested in Berkshires . Farmers of this class make valuabl...

What s in a Name ? Rev . W . N . Tobie . —What s in a name ? The rose by any other name would smell as sweet . —Shakespeare . Well , there s a lot in a name . In that word rose is more than three sounds and four letters . Sweet fragrance is there , and colors lovely as a dream of God . 0 , such yellow , such red , such pink , such lovely white—fresh from the artist mind of God ! What curves of beauty in clustering petals , what delicate carving on microscopic pollen grains ! All this is in a name . The name does not make the flower beautiful and sweet , but the rose scents its name with heavenly sweetness . The very word rose makes our nostrils tingle , our eyes dance with visions of beauty , our brains throb with admiring wonder , our hearts burn with thoughts of our Artist-God . That s whats in a name . The character of the rose is in its name . What s in a name ? Well , whats in yours ? Fragrance sweet , glory of color , beauty of form , wonder , and poetry , and worship are in a...
