THE DEMOCRAT. THE DEMOCRAT. PEARCE & SPENCE, Editors. McARTIIUK Tlll'KSDAY, SOVl.HDEK Itf, 1SS7. Democratic Victories in 1857. Tho capacity of the peoplo for self government is strikingly demonstrated in tho history of tho country. Occa sionally deceived by designing men who have their own private ends to subserve, the peoplo arc not long in correcting their errors and setting themselves right before tho world. Thus, Jaet year, under the humbug cries of "Bleeding Kansas" aud "Pro-Slavery locofocoiam," tho Black Republicans carried a majority of the States in the north by largo majorities. Their majority in New York was 80, 000; in Ohio 17,000; in "Wisconsin 15,000, in Iowa 8,000. This year, however, alter the masses havo bad time to take tho sober second thought, the result in tho above named States b9 been quito different. N. York and Wisconsin have wheeled into the dem ocratic column; Ohio is no longer a Black Republican State; Iowa Las been carried for tho Republicans by only...

It is evident that the dark cloud which has hung over tho business world for some months past is beginning to break away. The precious tnitala are pour ing into tho country at the rate of a million per week, and gold in ew York is only one per cent, abovo pa per. Many manufacturing establish ments which "hard times" cloeed up, are again in operation. The country is full of prod ncc of every description. The cottou crop is estimated at thirty millions more than last year; the wheat crop is worth some two hundred and twenty-fivo millions, while tho corn crop is worth even more than this. Thirty ships wero loaded at New York last week with flour and grain for Europo, and others were making ready for similar loading. Capitalists are beginning to liavo con fidence and invest their means ; and, in short, wo may announce that the worst is past and that 4'hard times" are going, we trust, to "come ...
