About four o'clock be was sot to work to clean out one of the large stills in the refinery, and in order to do so he en tered it, in doing which he was.cautioned not to use fire in the work. It seems that as soon as he reached the bottom of the still he lit a match, and instant ly an explosion of the gas accumulated therein took place, canning a load noise. As soon as the accident occurred Wilson was taken out, and found to be most terribly mangled?his nails torn otT, his hair burut to a crisp, and his skin in many places peeled off in great pieces. I>r. Hupp was culled in, and all that skill could do was supplied to relieve the victim's sulferings, which were said to be intense. Not much hope is entertained of Mr. Wilson's re covery. H...

It will be recollected that u lew days since we copied from the Kanawha Journal u brief mention of a decision jiiude by Judge Polsley, of the Kana wha Circuit, overruling a motion of William A. Quarrler, a returned rebel lawyer, to be re-admitted to practice at the bar of that court. We have since been favored with a copy of the Judge's opinion in full. It appears that Mr. Quarrier, who had boon for many years a practising lawyer in Kanawha, abandoned his home and profession in the Spring of 1801, and went South, obtained a commission in the rebel army and held it until the surrender in the Spring of 1865. He then returned to Charleston, and seeking to reinstate himself in his former position at the bar, took the amnesty oath, and made the motion to >5e allowed to practice. In the discussion of the case the law seems to have been ...

The figures cited in our columns Monday certainly showed that the val uation on which taxes have .boon as sessed for yearn, is far below the pres ent actual value of the property in the State. WEDXENDAY XOBXIXti, SOV. 29. Fire.?Yesterday morning the frame tenement house of Mr. Sweeney, in ?North Wheeling, accidentally' caught fire, but before the flames had made much headway they were subdued. It is very fortunate indeed that this build ing was not burned, as its destruction now would cause i;iuch inconvenience, if not actual suffering, to a large num ber of families who occupy the build ing* . We have fortunately recently been spared from mnch lire, and it is to be hoped that we inay continue to escape. At the present time of year, however, when fires indoors are ho much needed, old chimneys and pipes being brought into requisition, it behooves all to use care in making their winter fire ar rangement*. A little carelessness now may cost thousands of dollars and oeccasion much Inconvenience. In this connection we may remark that our new steam fire engine is now daily expected. Propyls are invited for building a house for it. This Is a move In the right direction, which we...
