ST. JOHNS, ATACHE CO.. ARIZONA, MAY 21, 1908. No. 37 Vol, 24. Washington Letter ITive conventions for the Nation's good are in session in Washington this week. The most important of these is the session of Governors from the several 'states. The Presideat has called them all to Washing ton to discuss with him the con servation of the natural resources of the country. The convention is of great interest to the West as in this section of the country most of our natural resources are to be found, and it is a well known fact that they are being wasted in a shameful manner. The other conventions are as follows: delegates from the American Republics attending the laying of the corner stone ol the Bureau of American Repub lics. The stone was officially laid by the President, and many noted mén addressed the conven tion among them were the Presi dent and Andrew Carnegie. The President and Mr. Carnegie were at odds in their speeches, the former straying from his set speech to advocate his ho...

pEgsio iysxAs grazing REGUUTIONS. :o:- The Government has just won its sixth important case conceal ing the validity of the regulat ions made by ihe Secretary of Agriculture to control grazing in the National Forests, in the United States Court at Denver, Colorado, Judge Robert E. Lewis has overuuled the demurrer of Fred Light, a wealthy stockman of Pitkin County, Colorado, which contended that the "graz ing regulations in force on- the National Forests are unconsti tutional. 'The whole case revolved around the contention raised by some Colorado stockmen that the Gov ernment is no more than a priv ate land owner in the matter of state fence laws. A number of states have fence laws which make it impossible for a private person to collect fees or damages from owners of stock which stray upon his land unless the land is fenced. The Nation al Forests are not fenced and on this the stockmen based their refural to pay grazing fees. A friendly suit to test the reg ulations of the Secretary...
