True itnerlcan Story. 9e ancestor of the good peoplo of jo United States went to that country ostensibly to escape the persecutions of aristocratic England, but alas ! for the inconsistency of human nature, they were far from abandoning aristojracy when they left their mother country. They took it with them, together witb all its accompanying notions and absur dities, and have lett it to their children, on inalienable legacy, which they seem to be trying to increase every day. la the duys of tho good colony of Virginia the distinctions between the rich and the poor were based upon laws which, like those of the Modes and Per. sians, altered not. One of tho most de vout followers of this code was a weal thy planter, living in what is known as the Northern Neck, lie was iu all oth. cr respects a trank, open hearted, manly gentleman ; but his estimate of his follow men was iounded upon the principles which governed his selection of his ?torse blood. Wealth, too, -was by no means an unim...

Just now tlicrc is a iod deal of Fpccti. lation who is to lo the candidate of tlie party for Fres'klc-nt in the coming con test. In tlic Ciiiciinitli Enquirer nud other western papers o( influence arc putting forth the claims of Hon. Gee. II. rctidlctoii, ot Ulno. Ihoso papers claim that he is the most available nnd hest man in the west. The New York Ilcmoerats are crpially assiduous in ad vocatins: the selection of lion. Horatio Seymour, of that State, as equally good and available, IJolh of them arc good enough, and cither of tliein if nomina ted, would,! triumphantly elected. For our own part, we have no choice Wo want a princinlc candidate. It mutes little difference how popular lie has been heretofore ; if he is a man whose "head is level" on the questions now agitating the country, and who will kern step to democratic music, he is the man for u.i and for the country. PRESIDENT'S MESS A G E . rttw Citizens of the Senate and House Vr Representatives : The continued disorganiration of the Onion, to which the President has bo often eal'ed the attention of Congress, is yet a uWecl of profound and patriotic concern. W may. However, nnu iuiuu icni that anxiety in the reflection that the pain ful political situation, although untried by ourselves, 13 not new ia the experience of nations. Political science, perhaps as highly per fected in our own time and country as in any other, has not yet disclosed any means by which civil wars can he absolutely pre. Tented ; an nlightcncd nation, however, with a wise and benlftoent Constitution of fres government, may diminish their fre quency and mitigate their severity, by di recting all its proceedings in accordance with its funamental law. When a civil war bm been brought to a close, it is manifestly the first interest and duly of the State to ' renair the iniurios which the war has in- flictcd. and to secure the...

lioa under the ystem adopted by Con press aggravate what I regard as the in (ribflio wrong of the measure itself. It h cost uncounted millions already, aod if persisted in will add largely to the weight of taxation already too oppress ive to be born witdout just complaint. and may finally reduce the treasury of coe nation to a condition or Daniuuptcy. We must not declude ourselves. It will ronuire a strong stsud ing artry and probably more than two hundred mill" ions of dollars per anum to maintain the supremacy of negro governments aftor they aro established. The sum tbu thrown away would if properly used, from a sinking fund large enough to pay the whole national debt in less than fifteen years. It is vain to hopo that negroes will maintain their ascendency themselves. Without military power they are wholly incapable of holding, in subjection the white paoploof the South. I submit to the judgment of Congress wheth the publie credit may not be in. juriously affected by a system of ...

Co HI III 1 1 I I I J I JOHN F. MOuKE, Kuitor. THUKHDAY : December : : : 10th, 18(37. Standing tlrmics. The sixty thousand troops composing the regular army ot the United States could be much more profitably employ ed in fighting the refractory Indians than in the unrepublican service of op. pressing and intimidating the Southern people. Gen. Giant has been much praised for his activity in reducing the expenses of the War Department; and for any approach to economy in that respect our tax burdened countrymen have reason to bo grateful. But the dismissal of a few score of clerks and hangers-on is scarcely a matter of con sideration, in view of the fact that vfe are supporting a standing arma three or four times moro numerous than the Government requires for any legitimate purpose. Tlio people have as much as they can do to pay the enormous bill that was run up during the war; and it is about timo for them to object to this extravagant military expenditure in timo of peace. The workin...
