NORTHERN TRIBUNE. SATURDAY. DECEMBER 29, 1S7J. THK OIJH SPIRIT DOHIXANT. The old southern spirit of anti-bellum ilay is again at the front in the halls of 4Joogress. And what else could we ex pect? The Democratic party have so nearly the control of the Legis4 itive de partment of the government that this spirit of domineering audacity, which from policy has been held in cheek, is be coming bold and outspoken. I NORTHERN TRIBUNE. SATURDAY. JANUARY 5, 1878. RECIPUOCITY. The excitement occasioned by the con test on the silver question will, we fear, remit in attracting the attention of the public to such an extent that some laws very dam:iing to the best iuterests of the country maybe, under the leader ship ot designing men, passed by Con gress. Since the abrogation of the re ciprocity treaty with Canada some years since, there has been a constant eflort made to procure a passage of some kind of a law admitting lumber into this coun try from Canada free of duty. Tuns far every effort in this direction has been foiled; but only by the most persistent efforts. The admission of lumber free of duty from Canada would almost, if not quite, ruin the lumber interests ot Mich igan. The lumber market is now stock ed with home production to the utmost limit, and leave even a small margin to the producer. The addition upon the market of the largely increased Canadian importation which the cutting oft' ...

NORTHERN TRIBUNE. SATURDAY. JANUARY 12, 1878. UNITED WORK. James E. Scripps, of the Detroit Even ing News, after making bis first visit bere, compaied Cheboygan to Chicago, calling it the Chicago of the North. The comparison was an apt one. To see the similarity, we may have to look at Chi cago as it was thirty years or so ago Then Chicago was not great, but the ele ments of greatness were plainly visible. But Chicago would never have been what it is now had it not been for the faith the residents had in Chicago. They believed in Chicago. They be lieved in it thoroughly. They talked lor it ; they wrote tor it ; they worked for it. There was no lukewarmness in their ef forts. They h:id their piivate quarrels and private animosities, aud bitter they were, too, at times ; but let a project come up in the success of which Chicago was benefited muoh or little, and all these things were lorgotten and as one solid phalanx came the people of Chi cago to the front, working for it. NORTHERN TRIBUNE. SATURDAY. JANUARY 19,1878. A SCIENTIFIC IGNORAMUS. Dr. Rominger is the stale geologist of Michigan. Tue third volume of his re port is out. and if that official knows as little ot the rest of the state as he does ot the northern part, his report can be of no value, but a positive damage to the state. On page 18 of his report he says : "The high plateau in the northern part of the lower peninsula is coyered with a pine forest to the exclusion of almost every other kind of timber. n A more stupid blunder could riot have been made if the Dr. had gone through in a sleeping c:T. On the high plateau in the northwestern portion of the lower peninsula there is more hardwood timber than ever existed in the lower peninsula at any one time south ot the Detroit & Milwaukee rail road, as any one knows who has ever traveled through the country. Again he says, "The soil, as long as some humus is mixed with it. may jjivea lair potato crop, or by cartful attendance garden veget...

NORTHERN RiBUNE 11' i SATURDAY, J AM ARY 26, 1878. THE AdlMCI LI1 UAL SOCIETY. Now th;C tlie preliminary steps looking to the organization of an agricul tural society in this county have been taken, we ti ubt that our citizens will not lose any interest in the movement. Those who were present at the meeting held at the court house Laftt week Friday could not tail to be impressed with the interest taken in the organization of such a so ciety. The attendance of those most in terested in such a society the farmers ot the county, in uch numbers, is one ot the best indications of the success ot the movement. As hei etofor i stated hi the Tribune, we believe that an agricul tural society, if properly managed, can do more t r the development ot the re sources of the county, and bringing them before the people, than any other means, especially as regards its agricultural products. We hope that all who are in terested in promoting the interests of the county will bear in mind the ad I journe...
