TERRY LEO THOMAS DC suburbs. They had a swimming pool and zip-line, and it was often full of neighborhood kids after the lawn was mowed and the chores were done. He met his beloved second wife, Helen, at a Parents Without Par tners dance and successfully cour ted her in a red Karman Ghia. Cleverly, he invited her two daughters along on their cruise ship honeymoon, where lasting family bonds were formed. Bob and Helen retired early from the federal government and moved to Santa Cruz in 1973. Bob built their dream house on the ocean then put his tireless energy to work in community af fairs and local politics. He was Chairman of the Bike Path Committee and the Lighthouse Field Committee. Right up to his death, Bob remained part of core group of friends that formed during the NASA years. The group enjoyed reunions in the early years of retirement, and mourned the passing of each friend as the years went by. It was Helen’s dream to see the wide world — and so they did. Fiorina has not run as strongly as her backers probably hoped, and has leaned heavily on her past record as a business executive to demonstrate her qualifications, along with surviving a bout with cancer. But her business record, unfortunately, was mixed, at best, and her resume hardly compares with Campbell’s. Experience counts, more so than ever, and Campbell’s resume is impressive. In addition to serving in Congress, he’s been a state senator, and even more importantly, spent a year overseeing the state Department of Finance. He’s also worked as a Stanford law professor and as dean of the UC Berkeley business school. Campbell harkens back to a time when politicians seemed unafraid to tell the truth, no matter the political consequences. That’s why his refusal to sign a no-new-taxes pledge is refreshing — he knows that a combination of tax breaks and new sources of revenue are going to be necessary to bring both the state and federal government out of massive deficits. At the same...
