WEDNESDAY MORNING, JANUARY 23, 1850 Oar ■»••!> [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 23 January 1850

WEDNESDAY MORNING, JANUARY 23, 1850 Oar ■»••!> Our Proprietor* took tho city by surpriso when yesterday they proclaimed the important epoch in tho career of our journal of ft daily sheet ar« rivod. It altogether o'ortopplod the profusion of nocromantio wonders peculiar to tho latitude and incidont to tho ago in which wo flourish. Not loss amazod were men who view with indifferent eye tho magical creations of mind and money about thorn, to find tho few crude annunciatory remarks, introducing tho first number of the first daily newspaper over published on the shores of tho Pacific. But thus it is, and an elaborate, eloquent forewarning of tho event would have i boon, to Bay tho least, quito out of character with tho rapid, changing, bustling nature of occurrcncos if not antagonistical to tho genius of our growth and tho spirit of our prosperity. Our Daily, as with all daily nowspnpers, in exnet proportion as it infuses new energy and activity into our business circles, impo...

Dlnholi, al Murder. [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 23 January 1850

Dlnholi, al Murder. One of the most horrid murders on record, hae recently been perpetrated in Boston, Massachusetts. The victim and tho supposed murderer, were both gentlemen of high reputation in tho scientific world, and stood high in the community If the suspicions arc just, the only motive would scorn to have been to get rid of a paltry debt of a few hundred dollars. It completely throws tho Colt, Coolidge, and Suydam murders into tho shade. We extract tho following account from our exchanges of this atrocious affair : This city was thrown into a state of the most intonso excitement this morning, by the announcement that Professor John W. Webster, of Cambridge, had been arrested and committed to Loverett street jail upon suspicion of having been the murderer of Dr. George Parkman, who very mysteriously disappeared during the afternoon of Friday, 23d ult. So far as can bo ascertained, however, it appears that Mr. Kphraim Littlefield, who resides at the Medical College in North G...
