ii m • ••• ...*•*.... r Tlie Galveston News of April 30, publisher in full the speech of one Col. Walsh Jones, an independent candidate for congress, and makes it the text for a somewhat elaborate editorial on the "uses and abuses of political parties." The editorial can hardly be said to possess the merit of explicitness; indeed after a pei usal of it we were scarcely able to deter- mine precisely what truth the writer was endeavoring to impress upon the numerous Democratic readers of the News. The necessity of opposing political parties in a Republic like ours is recognized, and a successful non partisan exercise of the election franchise is intimated to be merely an "abstract possibility." Col. Jones is quoted as inferring that both the Democratic and Republican par- ties have "degenerated into factions in which unworthy aims, selfish lead- ership, obsolete prejudice and misdi- rected fealty prevail over patriotic in- centive, statesman-like view sand generous aspirations," and fr...

■— *s The gaily Hews. ]DXQ NI SON « SUNDAY MAY 5 187?. Congress and the Indian Territory. SPECIAL LOCALS. To the Ladies of Deniaou FARMING LANDS Among the questions of present and prospective national importance, is the status of the Indian Territory. For several years past, a constant ag- I itation has been kept up with a view to effecting such a change in the re- lation of the various tribes with the United States, as would operate to open up that section to permanent white settlement. Bills to this effect are now pending in Congress, which are being urged with great pertinac- ity, backed up, as they are, by very strong outside influences. A certain element among the Indians them- selves, is in favor of the contempla- ted change. But the question which Congress desires, and very rightly too, to settle first, is whether this el- ement really represents the wishes of the people whose interests are in- volved in the proposed legislation. It certainly behooves the govern- ment to act ...
