Satanic cults appeal to adolescents with low self-esteem News Release Involvement by adolescents in satanic cults may be a symptom of an underlying psychiatric disorder ac- cording to an article in the October issue of Texas Medicine. Adolescents with low self-esteem and feelings of isolation and powerlessness may be attracted by satanic cults Dr. M. Basheer Ahmed a Fort Worth psy- chiatrist wrote in the Texas Medicine article. Such adolescents are looking for something to give them a sense of identification belonging power and control. "Considering the increasing number of vulnerable youth involved in satanic cult activities we must rec- ognize adolescent involvement early" said Dr. Ahmed. "Psyciatrists physicians and par- ents should be familiar with the warn- ing signs." Those signs include with drawal and alienation from family unusual preoccupation with black clothes and darkness increased inter- est in supernatural and occult lite...

X&WXx& Jodie Foster is an actress for the nineties by Tara Tremaine Some young actresses of today are falling into the rut of typecasting. For instance Julia Roberts has continued to dominate the screen with characters that tend to be extremely emotional victims of circumstance and underde- veloped never quite completing the potential of the character. Hopefully as Tinkerbell in Steven Spielberg's Hook due out in December will she get to cover new ground. Then there is Molly Ringwald who is usually on one or the other side of the tracks fighting peer pressure and the boundaries of the so- cial class. Finally with the exception of Edward Scissorhands when you see one Winona Rider film you have basically seen them all as she con- tinuously comes of age. These actresses have played their roles well but it is diversity that will add longevity to their careers. However as of late their is a serge of diversity in women's roles taking them from being the stereotype emo- tional and ...

Athletic trainers do more than just carry water by Tim Webb They may appear at first glance to be "glorified water-boys" with scissors and tape in one hand and their water bottle in the other. This is not always the case however. If a person is choosing a career as an athletic trainer they realize immediately that it is not as glorified as it looks where one can grab a bag of peanuts sit back and enjoy the game. Athletic trainers are responsible for the prevention care and rehabilita- tion of injuries athletes may receive while in competition. This is a huge responsibility which goes far beyond the limits of the urgent cry of "water- boy". In fact the profession was named an Allied Health Profession by the American Medical Association giving it equal status with other medical fields such as rehabilitation and nursing. David Stuckey head of the HSU Training Department considers the field as a "bridge between the medical community and the coaches. Trainers have to be able to communica...

Non-Traditional Student Car insurance causes headaches By John Carrol I told all of you liberals what would happen if you elected a woman- democratic governor. Remember what Ann promised to do? Straighten out the insurance companies right? Well sit backprop your feet up and get com- fortable while I explain what a good job she has done. I went to get a driver's license the other day and the clerk at the office said I couldn't have a license unless I had car insurance. I told her I was going to buy a car but I had to have a driver's license first so I could get insurance. People that sell insurance want to have your driver's licemse number so they can check your driving record. She said that the insurance would have to come first I finally found an insurance agent that agreed to sell me a non-owners liability policy on the condition that I wouldn't tell anyone he had done it I would change to a regular policy if I was able to get a car and I had to leave my Rolex watch as security. I...

Harp hopes experience will carry Cowboys By Chris Cafalone Men's Head Basketball Coach Dennis Harp looks to experience this basketball season to carry the Cow- boys to a successful year on the hardcourt. Comparing the cast of last year's edition to this years HSU Hoopsters the "Pokes" should battle for a conference title and playoff birth. Last year Harp molded a young Cowboy team (ten freshmen two sophomores and one senior) to an 1 1- 14 overall record including a third place finish in the TIAA and a birth in the District VIII playoffs. This year Harp welcomes back five players in- cluding co-captains Jim Nelson (jun- ior Dimmitt Tx) and Brian Edwards (sophomore Gatesville Tx). Nelson returns for his junior year after garnering Second-Team TIAA honors last year.
