THE DAIRY COWS THAT PAY. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville and Yarra Glen Guardian — 27 July 1900

TOLE DAIRY COWS THAT PA1Y. -o To determine the relative brofit of the variousi types of dairy cattle, the herd of the Connecticut college farm. at Storrs was divided into, three groups. Group one pontained the spare, deep bodied cattle, commonly called the dairy type. Groqp. two. contained those carrying too much flesh, blockily built and fattening easily, generally know:n as the. beef type, The third group included cattle not falling under either of the. other groups and lacking some of the qualities fitting them either for beef or milk production. Most of the cows of group.three were lacking in depth and digestive capacity. View ing all these groups from the stand point of. dairy production a great dif ference was noted, in the .net profit. The practical lesson for the dairyman is that he should weed out beefy and defective eows and buy only dairy type. Dairy, form as recognised- at present is expressed in a few words by Professor lIaecker as follows :-- We should try to obtain an...

CYCLING NOTES. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville and Yarra Glen Guardian — 27 July 1900

CYCLING , NOTES. --0 In issuing the Austral Wheel Race carnival programme in July, R. MIac Cullagh certainly cannot be said to be loosing cmuch time inl booming the great cycling event of 1900. Qf course the object is to allow plenty of time, so that the programme can be circulated in England, America, and on the Conti nent, with the chance of the rich prizes inducing foreign cracks to come out and compete. This year's programme differs little in composition from the last, the allotment of the prize money being the chief alteration, a larger per centage of the prize money, being given to the actual winners. This is particu larly noticeable in the ' Austral" it self, the first prize being £?00, second £75, and third £25, The total money to be given away during the three days' meeting-Saturdays, Dec. lht, 8th, and 15th, reaches the respectable figure of ea thousand pounds. Needless to say the meeting will be held on the Mel 1hobrne Cricket Ground, the scene of so many exciting Austral...

CORRESPONDENCE. (We do not necessarily endorse, nor hold ourselves responsible for, the opinions of our correspondents.) CROWLEY'S TRAMWAY. TO THE EDITOR OF THE GUARDIAN. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville and Yarra Glen Guardian — 3 August 1900

CORRESPONDENCE. (We do not necessarily endarse, ntic hold ourselves responsible for, the opinions of our correspondents.) CRQ.WLEY'S TRAMWAY. TQ THE EDITOR OF THE GUARDIAN. Sig,-Qn Friday last, your contem porary, the Lilydale EXPRESS, pub lished a letter from Mr. C. S. Win grove, Shire Secretary, Eltham, in which he says that my letter signed " Ratepayer," and published in your paper the week previous, should be signed " Ananias." That is all the reply he deigns to give to a letter which strongly questioned his actions in connection with an important local industry conducted by Mr. Thos. Orowley. It will not be denied that Mr. Wingrove ought to be a good judge of the character of "Ananias," or that the disciples of the great Biblical liar should have good memo ries, but he seemingly has the audacity to believe that be can treat the public with the same contempt as he metes out to the Eltham Shire Council. I can assure him, however, that the plan of abusing an opponent, instead of a...

A DISTRICT VINEYARD. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville and Yarra Glen Guardian — 3 August 1900

A DISTRICT VINEYARD. ----- ---- A .representative, of this journal a few days since visited the vineyard of Mr. Gillam, which is situated some six miles from Healesville, in the plrishl of Gruyere. The fis;s thing which strikes, tle. eye of the observer is the great ampgnt qf4 labor which is being spent in clearing, the. land. The block is one of 171 acres, 23 acres of which are cleared, 10 acres being de voted to. vine-growing, and 13 acres cultivated. The site is naturally adapted for growth of. every character, and no tinme is being lost by Mr. Gillam in clearing his land preparatory to entering upon the business of a vine and raspberry grower on a much larger scale. Part of the block is rugged and the timber is somewhat heavy, but by the aid of a Pomeroy Forest Devil the land it being denuded of all trees. The latter, when pulled down, are cut into six feet lengths, and are then burnt for tbarcoal, the output at times being very large. Mr. Gillam, who is a Frenchmaq by birth, wa...

ALCOHOLIC LIVER. An Injurious Custom Induces Misery and Melancholy. But now a Healthy Man Again, The case of MR. A. ERNEST BRAUII, (A Convincing Report.) A severe and dangerous form of liver trouble often arises from the il.judicions use q alcoholic drinlks. Men in certain occupa. tions are prone, almost forced by the necessities of their business, to this harmful habit. The wine and spirit merchant, the hotelkeeper, and tbl emnmercial traveller, are all apt to fall victims to the courtesies of their trade. This is a fact well known by life insurance companies and the medical profession; what is pot so well known is that even an extreme care of alcoholic liver may be repaired and made sound again by a proved and tri. d remedy Those in doubt should read the followi, g experience i f Mr. Ernest Braun, of 101 Cruickehank street. No Title [Newspaper Article] — Healesville and Yarra Glen Guardian — 3 August 1900

Many business men advertise only at certain seasons of the year, many prefer ring the fall and early spring. But the ex perience of advertisers who have male the subject a study is that persistent advertis ing is the best and rettirns more profit con sidering the outlay than advertising by fits and starts. It keeps one'always before the public in a. sense, and the power of a daily or weekly repetition of an advertisement is inestimable. A French writer says that the first time a person sees an advertise ment he hardly notices it; the second time, lie remembers he has seen it before; time third time, he reads it ; the fourth timrr he wonders if it meets his wants ; ttind tho fifth time, he buys the article. 'his, at least, is human nature. A single insertion of an advertisement seldom produces much impression, but let that advertisement be repeated for a month or six months, and satisfactory results generally will follow. People remember that they have seen it before, ind gradually th...
