COUNTRY FIRE AUTHORITY. CHIEF WARNS ON GRAVE FIRE PERIL. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton, Taggerty and Acheron Express — 2 December 1949

COUNTRY FIRE AUTHORITY. CHIEF WARNS ON GRAVE 'FIRE PERIL. Victoria's bush fire danger will be 'almost as grave as It was before the disastrous 1939 fires if the State gets 'dry- weather in the next few weeks. The chief officer' of the Country Fire Authority (Mr. C. A. Daw) gave this warning on his return from a State wide tour, checking on probable fire danger this summer. Mr. Daw pointed out that Victoria had experienced the wettest spring weather for. years. This had created a. dangerous fire potential. Gippsland and the Western Dis. trict farmers.are strongly advised to begin fire preparations immediately, because of the abnormally heavy un dergrowth. ' - The Country Fire Authority was running 33 schools for the State's 67,000 rural fire fighters already, said Mr. Daw. ' Firebreaks were .,being ploughed and burned everyWhere. "But landowners must Jelpp them selves," Ir. Daw added. 'Many more farmers ,have their' owYn Blr~-f ting equipment this year, but all country people will ha...

A COUNTRY PARTY. WHY? [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton, Taggerty and Acheron Express — 2 December 1949

A COUNTRY PARTY. WHIY? The Country Party came into beinf as a separate entity only after coun try interests had failed to achieve re cognition by other means. Rural or-, ganisations of various kinds attempt: ed for many years to influence policy by pressure methods outside the par. liamentary arena. They gave an en dorsement to candidates or parties willing to support country develop. ment programs. Later, groups of country members in Parliament formed blocs, only to be outnumbered and out-voted by the city members. In 1920, a group ol country members failing to achieve recognition for rural needs from ex. isting parties, formed themselves into the Federal Country Party. That was 30 years ago, and country electors are still being wooed by the.city legisla tors. One group, recognising the value of the country in rural legislation, has even gone so far as to appropriate the party's name. That is legal, but hardly ethical. It is no exaggeration to say that the formation of the Country ...
