WHEN THE WAR IS OVER. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 27 June 1891

WHEN THE WAR IS OVER. 'It was a shame to thrash me, so it was, boo-lioo t' was the burden of Mr. -, Maclean's speech at the declaration of the poll last Saturday. Bight through the address there ran a strongly-defined vein of resentment felt towards Mr. Morton for heating him in the late contest, — a speech full of spleen and blame to those who supported the mem ber. The whole thing reminded one strongly of a boy at school, childishly abusing the hand that wielded the rod upon him. Has that doughty warrior but weak general, John Maclean, slept the sleep of the 'tight' during the last week and -dreamed tho election just begin ing again, or has he made an early start for the next general election ? that not content with parading his dis comfiture l-y di iving round Nowra with a band, lie publishes in the last fesne of his paper a second address to the electors. The address resembles the original one in most respects, except that there is a new. gajpin the shape of another -verse of po...

? ♦ ? ? JUDICIALLY. The trial of the now quite notorioos ' Shine,' or Chris. 'Shine' was committed, but M'Plicrson and Taylor (the alleged aiders and abettors) were discharged witiiout a stain on thnir characters. It was just hinted by tlie counsel for defendant Unit perhaps tho police had been' rather in error in following up this case, but the Bench promptly denied this and were unanimous in speaking in high terms of the conduct of Sergeant Sykcs throughout the case. LOCALLY In referring to the late election in oiks of our issues a week or two back w-; baid, ' It is over.' Wo wish to state, that this must have been a printer's error. NATIONALLY. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 4 July 1891

NATIONALLY. Every man or body of men in the world is maligned by some, other men, Jind our present New South Wales Ministry has not escaped lroui certain fault-finding gentry in this way. But neither Oppositionists or anyone else -fan deny fnuts. We quote from the ' Sydney Morning Hut-aid' of Wednes day Jast : — ' The, revenue returns for the past quHrter havo giver, the highly Kitisfactorily increase of £208,331 or S.4 per cent. The increase for the twelve months amounted to £783,720. This improvement in the revenue therefore is not a thing of the quarter, but of a whole year, and occurring at a time when there is a disposition to complain of the existing conditions the effect should be one to give satisfaction. And without; boasting we may say that with much less encouraging results in Victoria and in - other colonies there ia everv reason to recard the revenue as an indication of the growing prosperity of our Jcading industries.' This as the result of the present freetrode°Minist...

Scientific Advertisement. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 4 July 1891

ScieatiSc Advertisement. Many aro the theories entertained by un sophislicatod iniuds upon this subjoct, the greater part of them bjing wideof the mark as to its policy, influence, and advantages. Modern advertising has become so much a scientific pursuit that the old comlitbiiB are altogethor changed, not merely elaborated and sysleinnised, but laid dowu on a newly devisod bneis, upon which is raised a superstructure at once eleeant and impressive. A simple announcement in as few words as possible (to save ex panse) regarding some article of ordinary economical value and domestic use, is now 8oarcel7 regarded by tho purchasing publio. To be effective and arrest atten tion nowadays, the article must possess some advantages hitherto not specifically attributed to it, which may refer either to quality or quantity ; aud the display of tbeBO new principles in conspicuous and attractive characters of the printers' or lithoeranhors' arts, constitute ojso vnrv marked alteration in modern a...

POLITICALLY. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 4 July 1891

POLITICALLY. ' Of course, if (as some of our con temporaries would -have us believe) an Assembly is to be formed a la Captain Marryat's three-cornered duel, with a party sitting on the cross benches as iu'g as either of the other parties, then tho only result we could predict would be tho result of Peter Simple's famous duel — deadlock. But this is extremely unlikely, and it would be very un natural for a large and powerful third parties. This would be *a programme very much more easy to spout upon than to act upon.
