The Peace of Eurppe. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 26 August 1848

? The Peace of Eurppé. ; ^he mission of Gj-eneral Radowitz to Vi- enna by,'the Prussian Government, had given rise to a report current in Germany, that hois empowered, to open négociations for a defensive alliance between the Courts of Austria, Prussia^ and ^Russia. This re- port has now been authoritatively contra- dicted (by the official journal of Berlin, and the intimation which accompanies this con- tradiction is scarcely less important than the facL itself. We are told that Prussia, ip. .conformity with the declared intentions of her Sovereign, will maintain her purely expectant attitude with reference to the new state of things in France, and will seek nofi other alliance but that of an united Germany, peaceable, but armed tagainst all outward aggression. The mission of M. King of the Belgians. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 26 August 1848

King of the Belgians. When the intelligence of the revolution at Paris and King Louis Philippe's flight reached Brussels, King Leopold assembled his ministers and councillors of State, and informed them that he had no wish to con- tinue to occupy the throne unless Belgium desired it, and unless he could do so with- out1 a drop of blood being shed to maintain him on it ; that this last 'condition'' he f made a sine qua non with any ministry, that otherwise he ^ould instantly retire to Claremont. The assembled ministers be- sought his Majesty to remain, and assured him of the loyalty, devotion, and affection of the Belgian people. <? "In that case," " replied Leopold, " I shall be glad to shed f the last drop' of my blood for the inde- pendence of Belgium." ¿<But, sir," ob- served Mr. -, " your Majesty will allow us to grant certain reforms ' to the "nation?" "Reforms!" exclaimed King Leopold, " You, must grant them. Do not 5 itek me for reform^-1 am not master (...

Dangers of War. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 26 August 1848

Dangers of War. These events in Germany have materi- ally diminished the probability of war with France, and, happily, the passions of the French people have, not shown at present any excessive tendency to territorial ag- grandizement. In truth, at this moment setting apart the uncertain state-of affairs in Lombardy, the most serious danger of war lies on the frontier of Germany and Russia,-in fact, in Poland. In all human probability, this conflagration will spread throughout the ' dissevered fragments of Poland, and the {Emperor of Russia, who alone in Europe is prepared to surrender nothing to the popular cause, will at least bear the brunt of the storm. From one end of Germany to the other, the cry of hatred against Russia is already raised. The triumphant liberation of the Polish » prisoners was One of the first acts of the people of Berlin after their victory.' > 'The power of Russia is universally regarded as the source of'¡that system which has1 so longf enthralled!'the c...

Report of the geological expedition to Doubtful Island Bay and Cape Naturaliste in the months of March, April and May 1848. [Continued.] [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 26 August 1848

Report of the geological expedition to Doubt- ful Island Bay and Cape Naturaliste, in the months of March, April and May   1848.     [Continued.]       At Cape Rich, is a small salt water river containing, about two miles from the coast, pools of fresh water, and forms altogether the lower and more narrow part of a wide normal break or ravine in the sedimentary deposits which rise by degrees or rather stairs to an elevation of about 150 feet     above the level of the sea.     In this valley we distinguish at once               a fossiliferous sandstone of different colour, cohesion, and proportion of argillaceous matter. The escarpments of these terra- ces present themselves, seen from the sea, as moderate flat topped hills, somewhat   elevated above e...

" , .? THE' INDEPENDENT JOURNAL. " Vox populi, vox Dei." . SÁTIJrSX^S^T^AÍX 1848. Two most important eefoems have been made during the past week ; the removal of the Pilot Establishment to Rottnest, and the restoration of the Bonded Store at Perth. The occasion of the first, was a trip his Excellency unexpectedly took to Rottnest, on {Monday last, unattended; a most judicious proceeding, and one which suffi- ciently indicates his determination to see and judge for himself, without being fettered with the presence and opinion of any party, whether interested or not. We hail this vigorous commencement of his Excellency's rule with the greatest pleasure, feeling convinced that by so act- ing he will justly carry with him both the good wishes and the co-operation of the settlers.
