Terrible Burning Fatality at WalM. MISS MAGGIE GLEESON BUJRNED TO DEATH. A rumour became current in town on Monday night that a serious burning acci dent had occurrcd at Wallal, but it was not nutil the followiug morning that the whole t#f the melancholy truth becamo known, when it was elicited that Miss Maggie Gleeson, the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Gleeson, of Wallal, had died in the hospital during the night. It seems that on Monday afternoon, between 3 and 4 o'clock, Miss Gleeson, with her parepts, was engaged in some gardeningJaboctlOO yards from the house, when she was sent to bring a bucket of water from a tank near the kitchen. BUT onward flew the intrepid Sorcerer, onward stretched hia rider, thinking lightning-winged thoughts of Lome, and of his helpless, parslywd mother there. With a caution inspired by former outbreaks of bush-fires, he had made at some distance round his homestead a bare circle. He had felled the forest trees, leaving one only here and there, at such distances that there was little fear of ignition. As the summer dried the grass, he bad set fire to it on days when the wind was gentle enough to leave the flaree at command; watching, branch in hand to beat out any blaze that might have travelled into the forest. By this means he bad hitherto prevented the fire from reaching bis homestead; and he had atrongly recommended the same plan to his neighbours, though generally with little effect. A well attended meeting of business people and others interested in the pro poned establishment of a weekly half holiday in Charleville was held at the Divisional Board Hall on Thursday even ing. Mr. J. F. F.
