WuLrs it is, perhalps, a matter for congratulation that the water coin missioners of Victoria and New South Wales have been able to ngree upon an arrangement for utilising the waters of the Murray, it is doubtful whether the residents of the Upper Murray, where the bulk of the water comes fr'oi Victorian soil, will look with favor upon the clause in the treaty which provides that no quantity of water can ho permitted to be diverted from the 3litta ,itta and Kiewsa .for the purpose of irrigation, without the consent of New South Walen. Ml TUTrm.LL, lM.L.A., ever on the alert, calls upon the people of the North Eastern district to resist the contem - plated alienation of ,the two streamss Hitherto there has been a considerable amount of irritatios connected with the discussion of this subject. ADVANCE, WODONGA ! TO THE EDITOR OF THE SENTINEL. [Newspaper Article] — Wodonga and Towong Sentinel — 14 May 1886

ADVANCE WODONGA     TO THE EDITOR OF THE SENTINEL. SIR,--- Some time ago a correspondent of yours, under the nom de plume of "Farmer," wrote, advising the Wodonga people to wake up and obtain a weigh- bridge for the town. I made enquiry at the time and was given to understand that steps were being taken to have one erected privately. This rumor prevented my seconding the motion. As time however, has gone on, and no apparent effort made to procure this very desirable apparatus for the benefit of the farming, as well as storekeeping population of the district, I beg to call attention to the matter. And I do so now with the view of its being brought before the Minister of Public Works, who is expected to pay the district a visit soon. I feel sure that the chance of bringing it under his notice would result in the thing receiving his instant sanction. The matter of estab- lishing the trucking yards, out of hand should also be kept before the proper authority. T...

The hall was crammed, and money had to be refused at the doors. The concert was for the benefit of the Athe?eoum, and the funds wore consider ably. Where all wore good, it would be invidious to particularisc; but praise is due to Moesrs Bruton, Soutlhern; and Hostin for the manner in which they performed their parts. A CASE FOR TO-DAY'S COURT. TO THE EDITOR OF THE SENTINEL. [Newspaper Article] — Wodonga and Towong Sentinel — 21 May 1886

A 0CASE FOR TO:DAY's COURT. TO TIIE EDITOR' OF TILE .SErlNTINL. Sai,- 16 tis un old imaxiun in English la\i .that nothing should be said i or writoen of .a case while still.sub judice. But a difficulty arises in the case of. Mrs Watson, : which comes before the court to-day:l A number of her old neighbors and friendls lave freely expressed the opinion that justice would be met by letting her' off lightly-with a caution or a liominal detention. Expressionse: of opinin ' so- generlly made are wrong, because they are apt to influence both thmpblice aind the bench. To counteract' the inflienc nori being exercised in'Mrs Watson's favor, pormit me to say, for the information of all whom it may concern, that inany local citioens consider that the case is one for a jury, and is of a serious nature.- Yours, &o., JUSTICE.

AN UNNATURAL MOTHER. [Newspaper Article] — Wodonga and Towong Sentinel — 21 May 1886

AN UNNATURAL MOTHER.   What appears to be an aggravated and   savage assault on the part of a mother towards her son was committed in   Wodonga on Saturday last. A family   named Watson, residing in the neighbor- hood of Mr S. Pyke's mill, have for the past few months been going about in an apparently uncared-for style. The father died about six weeks ago, and the mother, who had been addicted to liquor for a considerable time prior to her husband's decease, seems to have indulged in her drunken habits more than ever. On Saturday last, about midday, the unnatu- ral poarent ordered her son, a fine litte lad, about ten years of age, to go for some beer for her. Whether he refused to comply with her request or not, is at present uncertain; but at all events the marks on his head testify to the fact that he received brutal treatment at her hands. In the first place, after being asked to bring the liquor, his hat seems to have fallen do...
