AN EYE HOLIDAY [Newspaper Article] — Lismore, Derrinallum and Cressy Advertiser — 4 March 1914

EYE HOLIDAY, Everybody ,s})ou]d give his eyes a (lav's holiday at least once a month. This is the opinion of. an - .experienced house surgeon. "In tho: present age," ho says, "we experience) far more eye strain, owing to inereased reading ha bits and multitudes of glaring lights, than our forefathers did, and we suffer more from headaches. Therefore, givo [ your eyes a holiday as frequently as possible. Give them a day's absolute rest, and the relief the next day will bo mos-t refreshing. When talcing an ! eye-holiday a room with green 'wall paper is a good place to rest in if ono cannot get to the country and Na ture's green fields and bees. Green rests the eyes moro than any other colour."

Fire at Mortlake. [Newspaper Article] — Lismore, Derrinallum and Cressy Advertiser — 4 March 1914

Fire at Make. A disastrous fire broke out on Mr R. R. Urguhart's Booner Estate on Thurs day night of last week, and before it ran itself out, over 3000 acres of grass and timber country had been burned. It is supposed the fire was started by lightning, which accompanied a heavy thunderstorm. With a strong easterly wind blowing, the fire quickly spread into Connewarre Estate and por tion of Woolongoon, and came to a dead end at the Hopkins River right on the boundary of the Merrang Estate. The face of the fire was quite three miles in extent. No stock were lost, but a great deal of fencing was destroyed. Residents of Mortlake turned out in crowds to help beat out the fire, and it is estimated that 300 men were working at one time.

WEDNESDAY, MAR. 4, 1914. Bulk Handling of Wheat. So far as the principle is con- . cernecl, there is no question as to the value to the farmer of bulk handling' of wheat. Among its many advantages are the celerity with which the grain is dealt with throughout its journey from the farmer's waggon to the . ship, and the cheaper system of weighing, cleaning, grading and storing. A sum of £300,000 a year is said to be absorbed in bagging Victorian wheat, two thirds of which might be saved by,the introduction of the eleva tor system. Even if, as is urged by objectors to the system, mil lions were required for the equip ment of elevators, grain trucks, etc., the sum saved would be ample to meet the...

Educating the Farmer STATE MINISTRY'S POLICY. [Newspaper Article] — Lismore, Derrinallum and Cressy Advertiser — 4 March 1914

STATE MINISTRY'S POTICY. I SPEECH BY MR HAGELTI10RN. I Speaking at a social gathering at Horsham on Friday night, Mr F. Hagel thorn, Minister of Public Works, said it had boon indicated that this Government was not doing enough for the country. He ventured to .say that the present Government had done a great deal more than previous Govern- j ments for the development of the cnun- i try, as they would recognise if they : looked at their policy of country rail- J ways and the development of outer j ports. It might be true that the popu- j iation of the cities, especially Mel- | bourne, was increasing out of proper- i tion to that, of the country. There were j fewer people in the Wimmera now than : there were five years ago. That was ; unsatisfactory, but it was a problem j statesmen were facing all over the j world. There were many remedies j proposed, but probably one of the ) sanest was to enable the farmers and j those engaged on the land to be as well equipped educationally as men...
