THE ORIGIN OF GOLD AND QUARTZ REEFS. (Continued.) [Newspaper Article] — The Carcoar Chronicle — 3 December 1881

THE ORIGIN OF GOLD AND QUARTZ REEFS. (CoMttMUCf/v) Further, let n-o remark theso ininuts, hair-like lines under tho microscope (when magnified) simply represent, in miniature, an ordinary, vcry-dosoly-laminated quartz reef. Mr. Newbury remarks organic matter has long been known as an agent for precipitating gold in the metallic slate from its solutions, and the conclusion I came to was that tho organic matter in tho soft black carbonaceous slate, when this slate was decomposing and changing into quartz, became both tho precipitant and nucleus for the extraction of gold from the mineral waters that circulated in the reefs and tracks. I think tho black slates, however, contained gold originally apart altogether from tho mineral water, for it ia well known the 'casing' date is frequently very rich iu gold, aud that too souistimei in very little altered or firm elate rock. I communicated my idea on the origin of quartz rtsefs and gold to Mr. Mica Smith, B.Sj., of Sandhurst, who very kin...

MINING INTELLIGENCE. [Newspaper Article] — The Carcoar Chronicle — 3 December 1881

MINING INTELLIGENCE. Colbert's Battery is still at work crush ing stone front Grants claim, and the yield of amalgnm from the plates up to Wednes day morning, amounted to 231 ozs. from 54 tons of quartz. In the lease in which this battery is situated two quartz reefs exist, vuiMiuis narallel. and distant «m!v (mm t.V-A battery 50 aud 100 feet respectively. Mr. Nicholas proposes sinking a prospecting shaft on tho one nearest tho battery, with the double object of testiug the quality of the reef, and the probability of the existence of water at this spot at a comparatively shallow depth. Should this presumption be realized of finding water, as Beems probable, then ibis battery will have a permanent supply of (his most valuable clement for crushing purposes. Colberts' Claim, next north of Mans field's, which has been purchased by the Australasian Mining Association. In this claim or lease of 5 acre3 good gold has bean ! found in a reef that from present indications gives promise of tur...
