DETERMINED ATTEMPT AT SUICIDE IN A GOATL. On Saturday night, a young man, aged 25 years, named Miclhl Kinsells, made an attempt to take his life while incarcerated in the Williamnstown Gnol, on a charge of insulting behaviour. Kinsella had taken off his shirt and rolled it into the shape of a rope, and had suspended it to a fixture in the cell, when Constanble Bulger, the luck-up keeper, happened to look in on his usual rounds, and caught Kinsella in the act of putting the rope round his neck. The cunstablh seized the tltan and hadl him pliced under watch for the remainder of the nightt.

On Saturday orninl Thomas Iio-: king,.who Iad'charge of Tyii-in's railway crossing, -near'Euron, on the North Eastern line, was run over andi killed by the express train from Sydney to Mel bourne. Hosking was opening the gate to allow a horse and cart to pass through. Through some unexplained cause he did not observe the approach of the train. The. driver, seeing Hosking's danger, slackened saed, but failed to stop the traiq.until it had dashed through the half-npened gate, running over and kill itig Hosking. Death must have been instantaneous, for the lnead was almost severed fromu the budy. An inquiry ivill be held. The Ballarat correspondent to the Ase writes on Saturday :-" News was received to-day.of the death pf Mr. T. A NAIRROW ESCAPE. On Saturday night as tih 11.30 p.m. train to Oakleigh was within fifty yardi. of the Armndale station, a uman' ? tned Coles, whilst getting to the door of the carriage which he was in unfastened, preparatory to alighting at the station, by some mischance allowed the force of his body to push it open, and over-ba lancing himself, lie was precipitated oni to the line, causing some consternation and alarm amongst the occupants of the carriage. CHURCH OF ENGLAND MEETING On Friday evening last the adjourned meeting of the guardians of the church of England was held in the above church; The Rev. Mr.Higgins in the chair. Messrs. Bazeley, Halkyard, J.T. Colliver, G. Colliver, A. Maskell, Fuzzard, and Manly. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.   A letter was received from Mr. Boyd respecting the deficiencies in the Church accounts. and promising to pay the ac count after the 16th inst. On this ac tion of Messrs. Halkyard and Bazeley the letter was received.   Mr. J. Manly, who was acting sec retary. pro tem was elected secretary on the motion of Mr. Halkyard, seconded by:Mr Bazeley.
