MISCELLANEA. [Newspaper Article] — The Darling Downs Gazette and General Advertiser — 18 November 1858

MISCELLANEA, Fashions t* Ancient Rove. — Some idea may be formed of the extravagance of Roman ladies from the circumstance of one pearl in a necklace having cost six trillions of sesterces. The dressing-mom was amply supplied with perfumes and cosmetics. Blond hair was among the ancient Remans considered a gnat beauty, and all possible means were resorted to to obtain tub perfection artifiebDy, when nature lias denied it, or to heighten its effect. Ladies had their own hair shorn, to supply the place of Uieir own fcsir by tlie blonde tresses of tbe Germanic maidens, which were purchased for greater prices (ban their weight in gold. The fashion «u carried to such .an excess that tbe hair was even powdered with gold dust, a eastern said to have been introduced from the East. Tbe hair of tbe Emperor Comnwdus was saidtobesobriluaiit, partly try nature and partly by its load of es aeaee and gold dust, that it actually glittered in Uie eon and appeared to be en fire. Gold bands to confini...

BRITISH EXTRACTS. (From late English Papen.) Sir Fitzroy Kelly has just scandalised the fashionable wotid by avowing his marriage some time ago with his dairy maid. Tlie fact has been concealed until farther concealment was im possible, the lady having presented him with a son aad heir, to the intense disgust of lib only child by hb first marriage — a daughter, who is herself married and hxs a family. The Attorney General b in fab 62nd year. Tub Lite W. TELEGRAPHIC COMMUNICATION BETWEEN NEW SOUTH WALES AND VICTORIA. [Newspaper Article] — The Darling Downs Gazette and General Advertiser — 18 November 1858

TELEGBAPH1C COSTMUN1CATTOX BETWEEN SEW SOUTH WALES AND VICTORIA. . The extension of the Electric Telegraph be. tween this colony sad those of Victoria and South Australia, has now become a great fact Yes terday was fixed for the official opening which usually intervenes between the completion and the use of works of so much importance and general utility. It was understood that his: Excellency Sir William Denison would be nre sent to congratulate Sit Henry Darkly and Sir Richard Graves MacDonnell on being brought into communication so direct and so rapid, with ' the colonies over which they perside, and that each would receive from tlie other almost simul taneously an assurance that lib joy was reciprocated. But the Fates willed it otherwise; and, as at the Cherbourg fete, the great event of the day did not come off at the proper time. There was, however, this difference ; the mishap in the one cue was beyond rectification, but in the other it is satisfactory to kuow that tlie delay...

CANOONA DIGGINGS. To the Editor of the Sydney Morning Herald. [Newspaper Article] — The Darling Downs Gazette and General Advertiser — 18 November 1858

CANOONA DIGGINGS. Tc the LJitor of the Sydney Morning Ilorald. Sia — Your correspondent, W. S. J., from whom I did not expect some of his remarks, haa intro duced my uauio in his letter in this morning's HeralJ, in a way that demands from we a few words in reply. Otherwise 1 did not intend to publish a syllable on the subject of the gold at Canoona, till I had fulfilled a promise made in 1653 to a Committee of the late Lcguhtive Council, of sending' in a Report on the prospects of gold -fields in the northern regions of Eastern Australia, which fulfilment has been prevented by thu continued occupation -with which my correspondents, as well as my regular engage ments, and some that are forced upon me, con stantly supply me. W. S. J. sayB. 'The Rev. W. B. Clarke in assorting that gold would be discovered north of Moreton Bay, doubtlat, argued this from the existence qftilurian rodct in contact tcitk igneaus rocks. This opinion may still hold good as regards the long mountain tract, st...

CANOONA DIGGINGS IN A SCIENTIFIC ASPECT. To the Editor of the Sydney Morning Herald. [Newspaper Article] — The Darling Downs Gazette and General Advertiser — 18 November 1858

CASOON.V lUCiGINOS IN A SCIENTIFIC ASrECT. To tie Editor cj ik- Syinry Morning JItralif. ?Air — It id surprising that so little information has facn hitherto published as to the physical -r*turcd of the ecxallud diggings of tlie Fitz Uoy Jiivsr. Having received a very minute and trustworthy account of the locality from a pcrton who was there, and prospected in the ucigh'uourhood of Canoona, together with a small « nes of mineralogical specimens from the place itwUL I will attempt partially to eupplv the deficiency. At the same time, it is open for the many competent persons who must Iiave a peraonil acquaintance with the diggings to correct any errors into which I may fall. The wide and very flat alluvial lands of -the FiU Roy are broken -about 35 or 40 miles from . Rockfasmpton, by steep, stony; barren ranges, ?k'or tier* of -serpentine -rock. These, with their PP spurs and -bomobes, -are «o numerous, intricate, an-i- perfectly similar in aspect, that it is alipost impossible For a...

Everything hero remains in stattt quo, and tittt fur the arrivals and departures there would t*» ; a complete stagnation.
