THE MASTER PASSION. CHAPTER XIV RAYMOND DUVAL. [Newspaper Article] — The Lilydale Express — 28 August 1914

THE MASTER PASSION. - -4-- CHAPTER XIV. RAYMOND DUVAL. The winter passed away, and spring came laughingly in its train, with its exhilarating sunshine and wicked east wind. People ran about the streets un able to walk at a moderate pace, and the merest acquaintances, who usually passed with a bow, thought it neces sary to call out to each other, "Hor rible wind " Primroses and violets, which had come out with youthful rashness, wished themselves back again in the warm bosom of mother earth, and gir's whom vanity, induced to discard the " winter jackets nearly coughed thems Ives into their graves. Miss Brabazon sat shivering by the fire-a position from which she rarely stirred. She had acquired several new wrinkles during the winter, and she never smiled except at some folly or misfortune of her friends. She was as sour as a young crab-apple, and her temper was as genial as the blustering east wind. She never lpoke but to grumble, and when she read family-prayers, she chose the most ...

The world is eager for something new, which, however, sim ple it may be, will save labor, or ex pense, or do things better. Let it be more convenient, or promote pleasure reduce waste. People who handle things in every day use are the natural inventors of better things, and the natural capital ists of to-morrow. Read the splendid advice that Edison gives. Learn the procedure as to pa tenting in the chief countries,-then secure your own legal monopoly for your rights by becoming a patenteses. 2. If that workman or foremn , or your ingenious friend has produced a clever invention put him on the track of famous and wealthy inventors. Mr. F. THE BUTTER INDUSTRY. [Newspaper Article] — The Lilydale Express — 28 August 1914

THE BUTTER INDUSTRY. Analytical investigations, following the discovery that of late margarine, resembling butter in color, has been placed on the retail market in Mel bourne, led to the Health department instituting one or two prosecutions against loal manufacturers of this edible fat under the provisions of the Margarine Act. Several other prose cutions are pending. The act ex pressly prohibits the addition of color ing matter to margarine manufactured here, the object being to protect the butter industry-which is of much im portance to 'the State-from compe tition. Despite this prohibiion, mar garine manufacturers in the past have been adding coloring matter to mar garine for export, a practice which the Federal Government, by proclamation last month, ordered to be discontinued as "harmful to the Commonwealth." Rumors are now current that margar ine is being mixed with butter in Mel bourne and sold as butter, and, the matter having been brought under the notice of the Health depa...

MARVELLOUS MILK. [Newspaper Article] — The Lilydale Express — 28 August 1914

MARVELLOUS MILK. Sir Wilfrid Lawson once told a story relating to the mayor of a certain small borough who was famous for his teetotal enthusiasm. Ho was, however, asked out to dine with a neighboring mayor upon a particularly festive occasion. A wag of a waiter, observing some milk punch on the sideboard, filled a glass of it and placed it without warning at the guest's elbow. The worthy mayor, all unconscious, took a "long pull" at the beverage, and putting down the tumbler, exclaimed, with pious fer-. rour, "By George, what a cowl" "Suang is the most exnr-ssive of all languages," says Mr. B. Fitton. Why not call it "alanguapg"P
