REAL ESTATE New South Wales and Victoria THE CHIPPENDALE AREA. Something for the New Lord Mayor. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 27 January 1914

REAL^ESTATE New South Wales and Victoria THE CHIPPENDALE AREA. Something for the New Lord Mayor. A correspondent writes: — I notice that in what is called the 'Chippendale Area,' a block of buildings is being erected by the Sydney City Council for the purpose of providing accommodation for workmen — and, I presume — their families. This area was formerly much built 'upon and mainly composed of cottages and two-storey dwellings. The latest scheme is of the tenement order, and it would be interesting to learn how this scheme will compare with the former when we take into consideration the area per head. It strikes me that the position is not being im proved by any means. Large numbers of people are being practically herded together with com paratively little yard space. There will certainly be less of this per head under the present scheme. The idea from a 'lodging house' point of view is probably right, but from a residential point I say, decidedly no! Get the people out into more op...

VICTORIAN LOCAL GOVERNMENT BILL. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 27 January 1914

VICTORIAN LOCAL GOVERNMENT BILL. The ''Age' says a characteristic word or two: — 'People who are accustomed to sing the praises of Victorian Local Government bodies would have been enabled to revise their opinions a little had they listened to the criticisms passed on the Amend ing Local Government Bill in Parliament. There are boroughs, like Smythesdale and Scarsdale, where the revenue is barely enough to pay the salaries of the officers, and where yet the public spirit of the townspeople has enabled them to make some show of beautification. The waste of main 'taining such local bodies in a separate existence is as manifest as is the maintenance of a Governor jind two Houses of Parliament for Tasmania, with ?a population only about one-third as large as the city of Melbourne. 'As the law is at present, these tiny local bodies can amalgamate only on petition directed to the .Governor in Council. The Amending Local ?Government Bill, which was read a second time in Parliament, gives p...

INSURANCE SCHEME. Footscray (V;) is. seeking the co-operation of metropolitan councils in the matter of launching a lire insurance scheme. Prahran Council decided to be represented as a matter of courtesy. ' One councillor mentioned that the matter had been dis cussed some years ago. If an enormous loss were sustained through a large fire, it might mean a heavy rate, .i However, there are two sides to the question, and Footscray is to be commended forrits enterprise j'in introducing the matter. ? m ?

ADVANCE OF REINFORCED CONCRETE. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 27 January 1914

ADVANCE OF REINFORCED CONCRETE. Not only is reinforced concrete making progress in the city, but also in the suburbs. A WORD TO BACCHUS MARSH. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 27 January 1914

A WORD TO BA.CCHUS-MARSH. Bacchus March1 .Council'* (Vj)' 'wants an officer 10 nil the positions o*f Engineer, Secretary, 'Rate Col lector, Interim Valuer, Inspector of Thistles, and inspector under the Pure Food Act, at a salary of £800 per annum. It might be information for the local council to know that -wharf laborers in Sydney to-day are making nearly the amount offered to a brain worker. If a wharf laborer upset a truck and precipitate the contents into the water, he does not stand the loss. But if an engineer build a road or a bridge inefficiently he does, indirectly. His pro fessional reputation is tarnished, and he is turned out on a cold world to shift as best he may. Apart from the engineering qualifications, the officer wanted by Bacchus Marsh is really to supply the brains of the Council for £fi-a week! Private practice is allowed. Which is adding insult to injury, as no. man witii the duties prescribed for him by the Council could possibly find time for other work. Whe...

A UNION'S SPITE. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 27 January 1914

A UNION'S SPITE. The Geelong Trades and Labor Council has passed a resolution denouncing farmers and the Independent Workers' Federation for assisting Messrs. Stone and Siddeley, the contractors for the Geelong sewerage works, in their struggle with the men who went out on strike for increased wages. It has also decided to call upon -the Sydney Trades and Labor Council to retaliate upon Messrs. Stone and Siddeley, in Sydney, where they have also con tracts in progress, the reason given for that action being that the contractors volunteered to supply men to work the steamer Dorset, which at that time had been declared a 'black' boat in connection with the recent New Zealand strike.
